Cartoon: Ordination

Hello everyone. Another cartoon after a few days break. We were in Exeter – let me know if you want to see my holiday photos of a car park.

Today’s cartoon is entitled ‘Ordination’. Click here for the high resolution version for reuse. Once again this one can be found in the book The Exciting World of Churchgoing.

As far as ordination goes I have no particular wisdom. But here’s a short paragraph on non-ordination from an interview with Ronald Blythe in tomorrow’s Church Times. I quite liked it.

But he resists ordination himself. A Dean of St Paul’s, Alan Webster, tried to persuade him to become a priest, as did a Bishop of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich, Leslie Brown. “I couldn’t get them to understand that it wasn’t my role,” he says. “I actually think the laity is enormously important. The laity means the people of God.”

Amen to that, Brother Dave. In my book, we’re all ordinated. I was once urged to train for the ministry by one or two people I respected, but I always felt I was doing ministry and didn’t need a title and some odd clothing to prove it.

  2. Liz from the sewing room says:

I agree with Russ. If I am allowed to be facetious about such things, ironing the vestments would be enough of a put-off! will however be sending this to friends who are planning to be ordained!

Love the cartoon Dave. I went to a school’s Harvest Festival recently and ended up helping with the chairs afterwards. The dinner ladies were pleased which I took as a good days work.

Just to prove we remember some of the things we read in those copious number of books John Zizioulas says we are all ordained at Baptism and even the D P and Bs are still Laos. An insight from the East!

  4. Ann says:

Those ordinands who have wives will be getting their wives to iron their vestments! 20 years on I am still ironing my ordained husband’s not so recently purchased vestments – just not quite as frequently nor anywhere near as enthusiastically.
