Things that won’t be happening

There’s only a few weeks until the book comes out, which is good, and I’m looking forward to it.

Sadly a couple of things won’t be happening as hoped. They are both topics that people ask me about a lot, so I’m posting here to explain.

1) 2013 calendar
There won’t be a calendar for 2013 I’m afraid. Unfortunately people aren’t buying them any more – well, not enough anyway. We are all now using advanced electronic devices rather than the old fashioned cartoon calendar. There is, in theory, the possibility of making my own, but I’m not sure that I have the resources to do so.

2) Greenbelt gig
I’d hoped to show some cartoons at the Greenbelt Festival this year, but my application wasn’t successful. It is just one of those things [edited]. But (all being well) I will be there, and there will be a new book, and a cartoon map (for Angels and in the Church Times Guide to Greenbelt), and a new t-shirt.

    Sorry to hear there won’t be a calendar – I put one on the inside of the loo door every year. We will miss it

    A shame about the calendar. Would have been a dead cert. as a Christmas present. Still, I’ve got the book to look forward too :)

    So I’m going to have to tear pages out of the book and put them on the kitchen wall to amuse myself year round?!

    So sad that there won’t be a calendar as are the six people on my Christmas present list. We’re all looking forward to the book though.

    so sorry about the Calendar Dave, the cartoons were so accurate and cheered up my day. It will be missed, hopefully it may re-appear another year?

    Hi Dave – Sorry to hear about Greenbelt. I’ll email you.

    I’m not sure who you applied to, but for what it’s worth, the Talks team had 162 applications to speak for only about half of the slots (the rest are taken up by requested speakers – the Tony Campolos of this world). I therefore wouldn’t be demoralised by people not getting back to you, as they have 162 speakers (not to mention the 292 bands) chasing them for information, and people – sadly – inevitably get missed.

    Sorry to read that Dave, as will be my friends who kindly buy me the calendar for my birthday ;-) My advanced electronic device just frustrates me, whilst the calendar brightens my day.

    T Campolo v D Walker – no contest from my point of view! Hey ho – you get to wander around a bit and accept (appropriate) adulation! :-)

    SO sorry to hear that, Dave – gutted there won’t be a calendar or an exhibition. Will you be taking up guerrilla cartooning onsite instead? The maps, book and t-shirt are all eagerly anticipated in our family!

    Serena – There may well be an exhibition, just not me standing up in front of any groups of people.

    It doesnt take major resources to publish your own calendar – mainly it takes a decent printing co, someway of accepting payments, and someone to post them out. Plenty of local printers would probably offer you a decent deal in these current economic times.

    Upset to hear there won’t be a calendar next year. I always bought one for the church vestry and everyone who came in looked at it and laughed and it cheered us up. I wrote on it things like when to change the altar frontals and to what colour – much simpler to see than forever looking in the lectionary (and much less likely to be forgotten….), churchwardens and vicar’s holidays, PCC meeting dates, and so on. I suppose I can do all that on any other calendar, but any other calendar won’t have your quirky, funny cartoons and I will miss them. Please do one the year after next if you can. We all especially liked ‘The Periodic Table of Churchgoers’, which had us in stitches.

    You can use something like CafePress to publish your calendar — or some print on demand service – so we can still buy them — check it out.

    Disappointing news about the 2013 calendar, Dave. It is a favourite here at St. Brigid’s Episcopal Church in Northern California. If you are still collecting ideas for cartoons, how about alternatives to the Walker calendar for keeping the congregation organised.
