I am very pleased that my local Cathedral(Chichester) doesn’t charge and manages to keep the feel of a large parish church. Jesus says “Freely you have received, freely give” and yet we so often confront the casual church visitor with a collection plate. end of rant…
A clear encouragement to donate is all that’s needed in my view. If your cathedral is a tourist trap, people will give if they’ve had a good experience and sense a warm welcome.
A compulsory charge just sends all the wrong signals. If we want people to come in, why put barriers in their way? Etc, blah.
