Cartoon: Non-stipendiary ministers

non stipendiary ministers

Today’s cartoon is Non-stipendiary ministers. it is all to do with the way NSMs (as they are known in some dioceses, but not others) are paid.

Cartoonists are paid in similar ways, as it happens. Bookings for Sunday lunch currently being taken.

  1. Liz from the sewing room says:

Hugs are good. I used to have a (paid) job which involved a lot of hugs from sweet older ladies. I suppose theologically we should be hugging people we dont like though as well as nice sweet people. Incidentally, I am sat at my desk with 2012 calendar showing May. As a non-Anglican I havent a clue what the North Transcept is. But I know what a Narthex is because we have one.

  2. Margaret says:

Is a Narthex a type of whale?

  3. Dave says:

As in ‘Jonah in the Narthex?’

Liz – The truth is that I can’t really remember what a north transept is without looking it up each time. Thank you for your enthusiasm for the calendar. I can confirm that May is the most up to date month as we speak.

Just wondering if NSM actually get paid in kind?

Because I was imagining them haggling for a working breakfast, lunch or a 4 course, evening dinner with all of the trimmings!

I can also imagine NSM’s in a Sunday Market vying for trade with competing churches, who are in interregunum or have a casual vacancy due to the Vicar being on holiday or unwell.

    Perhaps they deserve another cartoon?
