Cartoon lab: Going back to church

Good morning. A break from cartoons today as I could do with a tiny bit of help. Today’s topic for the cartoon lab (hosted on this blog today):

Going back to church

Any suggestions on this welcomed: What to expect, what to do when you get there, what to expect, pitfalls to avoid, any other angle you can think of. I need to do a new cartoon on this subject today: any suggestions welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Cartoon: Cathedrals

cathedrals

This is but a mere glimpse of the whole thing – click here to see it all: Cathedrals.

[Space where I make some pithy and informed comment on whether cathedrals should charge or not, leading to an interesting debate in the comments section]

A version of this cartoon hangs in the Church House Bookshop in Westminster. Well, it did the last time I looked. It is in the ‘art and architecture’ section. Picture below.

Cartoon: The five marks of mission

5 marks of mission

Toay’s cartoon is ‘The five marks of mission‘. That link has the full version.

I’m aware that not everyone will understand this cartoon as not everyone will have heard of the five marks of mission. This is why I am posting this on a Sunday, as no one is reading. If in doubt ignore this post and come back tomorrow for something more comprehensible.

Cartoon: House for duty

house for duty

The full-sized version of this cartoon is here: House for duty. I should mention that the Lambeth Conference reference is because this was drawn circa 2008, when that was the topic of the day.

I hope you have a good weekend in your mansion or in your shed, in the sunshine or in the drizzle.

Cartoon: Occasional attenders

occasional attenders

Today’s cartoon is entitled ‘Occasional attenders‘. Click through for the large version and information on republishing and other advanced activities.

I have become a bit of an occasional attender at church if I’m to be honest with you. If anyone is really that interested I suppose I could explain why.

Cartoon: Non-stipendiary ministers

non stipendiary ministers

Today’s cartoon is Non-stipendiary ministers. it is all to do with the way NSMs (as they are known in some dioceses, but not others) are paid.

Cartoonists are paid in similar ways, as it happens. Bookings for Sunday lunch currently being taken.

Stations of the Kings Cross

stations of the kings cross

Stations of the Kings Cross is a marvellous project that was created by an anonymous artist earlier this year. In summary, it is a prayer booklet containing stations of the cross images designed to be used whilst travelling on the London Underground (Circle line). You can read more about it and see the artwork / booklet here.

I know I’m a little late to the party on this one, other websites having posted about it months ago. But I wanted to mention it as I think it is brilliant. Also to alert you to the following facts:

1) the paper cuts are being auctioned for charity on the website.
2) an exhibition of the pictures is taking place from this Saturday, 26th May, at St Mary’s, Somers Town (Eversholt Street – near King’s Cross Station). At 7pm on that day there will be evening prayer followed by an opportunity to see the pictures.

Today’s cartoon is for those who look through the advertisements for clergy jobs at the back of ecclesiastical newspapers and would like to know what they mean. See the full version here: Clergy advertisements – understanding the hidden symbolism.

Cartoon: The flower ladies

flower ladies

I have a large* number of new-to-the-website cartoons to be uploaded over the coming weeks. I’m starting off with an additional batch from book 2, ‘My Pew: Things I have seen from it’. Today’s cartoon is ‘The flower ladies: secrets of their secret common room’. Click here for the full thing along with republishing info, etc.

It should be noted that the ladies in the cartoon are actually plotting against cartoonists who continually depict them in diagrams. If I don’t receive threatening messages from them it is only because of postal delays.

*We’re talking a number with ’0′ on the end, that isn’t ’0′.
