Book 4

Book 4

[Larger version]

Photograph: Last night I arranged the cartoons from the still-to-be-named ‘Book 4′ in the order in which they will appear. In the first book they appeared in file-name order because I didn’t get around to arranging them. ‘My Pew’ and ‘Exciting World’ have them more logically ordered, not that anyone but me would have noticed if they were peculiarly arranged.

The book, to be published in time for the Greenbelt Festival in August, still has no title. Anyone who comes up with a title that I go on to use will receive prizes. I mean actual literal ones.

Today I will be handing in a memory stick with all of the image files and the small pieces of paper numbered in the correct order (pencil, upper left corner). Conveniently the publishers, Canterbury Press, have their offices about twenty two steps from the desk I go to on Wednesdays and Thursdays to put bold and italic tags into web pages.

  1. Davvid says:

How about “Dave Walkers How To Do The Church Thing”. The comics in the image seem to offer a lot of guidance and the book may turn out to be a useful reference for people who do Church…

  2. serena says:

“Churchgoing: A Guide for the Confused”

  3. Balaam says:

A book title? Take it from one of the cartoons.

    I like “Irritating Habits”.

  4. Liz from the sewing room says:

I like Serena’s suggestion. Cant wait to see the photocopier one!

  5. Dave says:

Thanks for the ideas. Serena: I like ‘confused’ but am trying to avoid ‘churchgoing’* as I used it last time.

Balaam. Yes, taking it from one of the cartoons is the way I was heading.

Is now the time to admit that I was so busy doing this blog post that I forgot to bring the cartoon papers I was blogging about?

*Yes. DW is trying to avoid churchgoing.

The Joy of Tea Towel Rotas.

    Not Sunday School again….

    The Politics of Cleaning Rotas

The Hassocks: An everyday story of church folk

    Cartoons of Praise

  7. Denis Huntley says:

As you have taken the trouble to organize the cartoons how about “decently and in order!”

  8. Martha S. says:

“The Fourth Gospel: According to Dave”

  9. Linda Cosgriff says:

I’m a great fan of bad puns in titles (and in general).

    Aisle Be Seeing You
    Mind Your Teas And Pews
    Find Your Teas And Pews
    Never Mind The Hassocks

Such a shame your name is Dave – The Pete Attitudes would have been great (say it quickly).

  10. Alison says:

If you’re thinking of using one of the cartoon titles as the book title, how about ‘The Dave Walker Guide to Standing and Sitting in Church?’ It seems to me that when to stand and when to sit is one of the main things that people worry about when they come to church, if they’re not regulars and the main reason everyone sits at the back; so they can watch what the people in front of them are doing and not make a fool of themselves, standing when they should be sitting and vice versa. This is supposing that the people in front of them are actually getting up and down in the correct places, of course…………
Whatever you choose to call it I am very much looking forward to it, as there look to be a lot of very relevant cartoons!

  11. Deacon Susan in California says:

I like what Alison has written. We have rather a lot of people with hurty legs who sit for hymns, and kneeling is now a rare event. People will appreciate your guidance in these matters, Dave.

  12. Clare says:

How about running two titles together, thus “Liturgical
dance at the door” or “Spring cleaning long serving parishioners”
or “The Treasurer: irritating habits”. Or, in the spirit of Gerald
Durrell, insert ‘and other’, giving “Liturgical dance and other
emergency procedures”, “The photocopier and other untapped
    talent”.

  13. chris clark says:

    Book IV

    The Mystical demisted

    Insanity in the sanctuary

    The cartoon canon

    Nave gazing

  14. Aaron says:

I like “Peculiarly Arranged” myself. You could dress it up…”Peculiarly Arranged Church”.

  15. Mark Bennet says:

The Church Volunteer’s Handbook would seem to cover it …

  16. RuralVicarJames says:

    …in a peculiar order
Book IV – The New Hope
Everything you ever wanted to know about church
Faithbook – How to understand Church

I just wanted to contribute really, others’ ideas seem better…

  17. andym says:

Dave Walker Explains Liturgical Politics…? (he says, randomly linking cartoon titles together)
Actually, Dave Walker Explains could work just as it is…

  18. sarahw says:

Always fancied the idea of something along the lines of ‘the quick and the dead’. Goes back to when a friend whispered to me, during a rather dull evensong, ‘where do the choir fit, they aren’t dead, but they certainly aren’t quick?!’

  19. Rosalind says:

The Forty (or 36 – however many cartoons as long as not 39) Articles
    for Bemused and Confused People

  20. Benjer McVeigh says:

  21. Ash says:

  22. Dave says:

List of cartoons and the memory stick finally handed in. Again, many thanks for all of these ideas, they have been very helpful. I have one word of the title based on the suggestions above – now I just need other other(s).

  23. RuralVicarJames says:

Well done on getting the stuff handed in. Now I can eagerly await publication!

  24. serena says:

    Hurrah! I hope you’ve successfully avoided churchgoing…?!

  25. Dave says:
