January 2012 update

A personal plea

Happy Incredibly Belated New Year everyone.

News:

1. I have been continuing with my activities.
2. I joined the Professional Cartoonists Association. I have a profile here. I intend to be more professional from now on.
3. A new website on its way. It will be for non-church-related cartoons.
4. An upgrade to this website is on its way. There will be some improvements.
5. A relaunch of my licence system is on its way. There will be some improvements.
6. I have been beset with problems (technical). Problem a: inability to make any printer / scanner work using my main computer (Mac). Problem b: I tried to make my mobile telephone take photographs in pure black and white (no grey like the one above) and failed. Problem c: My cascading style sheets are in a knot.
7. I still don’t really have anywhere to go and work during cartooning days (diagram above) but I have learnt to deal with this.
8. I was going to learn to make newspapers, but it didn’t happen.
9. New year’s resolution: to draw in notebook every day. There have been quite a few days when I have not failed at this.
10. It is dull when people say they intend to blog more, but I do. There may be some shorter updates with less academic depth, etc.

Splendid news, Dave – may the sun shine on all your endeavours.

This year I mainly intend to take it as it comes, anticipate the rough with the smooth and breathe more deeply. It’s going OK so far.

I might also learn to yodel.

  2. RuralVicarJames says:

My doors are open (front and back); there is coffee available (real or instant) – and biscuits; there is web access and, sometimes, the house is warm. Dave – you are welcome (but I am still more than 3 hours away from where you live…)

  3. Dave says:

Russ – thank you. Your aims and objectives for the year are admirable.

James – very kind of you indeed. (I nearly drew this up into a proper CT cartoon in the hope of urging churches everywhere to open their doors to isolated freelancers. But didn’t.)

  4. Breige says:

Good to get an update.I free-lance and am often slogging away on my own, preparing sessions and resources during the day. Was hoping that you hadn’t succumbed to cabin fever or some other scruvy which affects those of us forced to hide in silent rooms or walk the streets in search of a friendly work space. (I occasionally take pen and pad down to ASDA coffee shop. Warm. People. Trivia. Mind free wheels. Blessed relief.)

Your cartoons and comments make the days lighter.Good luck with the plans. God bless the work.

  5. Alison Ud-din says:

Nice to hear from you again Dave.
If you are ever in the North West of England you would be most welcome to sit in my living room and look at your computer (or mine if you prefer – it has a very colourful skin.) Coffee is always freely available.
Good luck with all your plans.
Looking forward to all the exciting cartooning in 2012.

A bit far but hte door is always open in Rustington Dave

does that mean you have resigned from the amateur cartoon society? Are they feeling bereft?

A new website – oh the joy of the new as opposed to the tedium of the old:-)

like it the way it is – this is my website , this has always been my website :-)

I hope it brings in some more income without the grief of having to invoice

Stick to PCs! He said without a hint of theological bias:-)

Glad to hear the resoloution is not entirely broken. Having resolved not to make any resolutions I found myself in a philosophical conundrum.

AHNY to you also – we have missed you

  7. Deacon Susan in California says:

    Dear Dave,
My door is open too. Very comfy here. Hope you are not allergic to cats. Stripey Longlegs the tabby says he would sit for a portrait any time, actually he would lie down curled in a ball such that even I could draw him. It’s a month since Christmas, must go put the wrapping paper away.

  8. Liz from the sewing room says:

You be welcome at my house too. You didn’t add that last
week you drew a cartoon on the back of a receipt. Thank
    you.

  9. Dave says:

    Thanks all for your kindness.

Liz – how do you know that ?! I think I may not have put 2 & two together…

  10. Liz from the sewing room says:

The recipient phoned me and told me. She was very pleased with it.

  11. Dave says:

Aha – I see. Pleased it was enjoyed anyway. I’d have used better quality paper but that was all that was available at that moment.
