Mobile telephones

mobile telephones

Just a quick Monday morning cartoon from the notebook. If no-one has ever used this joke before I will be amazed.

Cartooning update: July is always a busy time of year as I am trying to get ahead of myself before taking a slight break, and some publications understandably need to bring deadlines forward for similar reasons. Also there are one or two Greenbelt Festival-related projects to be completed.

The move from CartoonChurch HQ is probably 12% completed, which is quite good progress all things considered. Part of the task is to make room in our house for all of my cartooning paraphernalia, and I have completed at least 16% of this task. I still have some office furniture and nick-nacks to get rid of (only got rid of 18% so far), and will, at some point, post some photographs here.

As always any cartoon subject requests will be considered very gladly should any be posted here or sent to me.

That is bad – brilliantly bad!

P.S. Did I spot you at Maggi Dawn’s book launch on Friday?

  2. Dave says:

Hugh – I was indeed there. A most enjoyable evening.

  3. Janet says:

The other day a non-christian friend went to an evangelical church and said how terrible it was that everyone was looking at their phone’s and i-pads during the service. We suggested that if they looked serious they may be looking at their e-bible or taking notes…the comedy of course is the person using this as a cover for other activity… When we gather for morning prayer on a Wednesday we all us our phones/blackberry/i-phones instead of books…at least I think they all are…

  4. Sioned-Mair Richards says:

Groan. Loved it and will share it shamelessly !

  5. rose22joh says:

ah, the one on the left was also off the hook…

  6. Liz from the sewing room says:

I use my iPad to read the Bible from in church.

If you are looking for cartoon ideas – church kettles and their unbelievable slowness against all other kettles!

Plus there were honestly some comic moments at my dad’s funeral this afternoon!

  7. Russ says:

Subject for a cartoon: Bible reading styles in church (ie when someone comes to the front to do the reading).
eg monotone (I will read these words if it kills me but it might as well be a gas bill)
dramatic (loads of emphasis and hand gestures)
sing song (like a cartoon vicar delivering a homily)
bemused (I haven’t a CLUE what all this means)
jolly (possibly inappropriate for Old Testament judgement passages)
improvised (bearing only vague similarity to the text)
I expect you can think of lots of better examples …

  8. Dragonfly says:

    Cartoon subjects:

    1. True story. Christmas pageant. During time with children, priest asks, “Do you know where the Wise Men came from?” Small child pipes up (with a hint of “are you stupid”), “They came down the centre aisle!”

    2. Churchlady signs. I was in a church where the kitchen was so covered in signs there was barely room to do any food preparation. Woe betide the person who accidentally puts a hand towel on the bar clearly signed for dish towels.

    3. Churches covered in “I’m important” brass plaques that are on every conceivable item including the porcelain throne.

  9. Rosalind says:

In view of recent confusion over wedding (and funeral) fees, a diagram of some of the “optional extras” that a wedding couple could be charged for, or might request, would come in useful

  10. rob says:

Brilliant! Gotta love groaners. I saw a birthday card a few days ago. It had a picture of a large horse stood in a bar, with the caption “Why the big horse?”. The message inside read “Big horse it’s your birthday!” :-D

I like your stuff. It’s hard to find a brain similar to mine. I don’t know if that was a compliment or not, but cool ideas with your cartoons, very original.
