Goodbye CartoonChurch HQ

2010-12-30 17.31.50

Keen observers of my blog may have noticed some small hints that I’ve been thinking a bit about what I do and how I do it. I’ve decided, for now, to make one change, that of saying goodbye to CartoonChurch HQ, the office I’ve been working in for the last year and a bit. The idea was that getting out of the house to work would be a good thing, and you might remember my excitement and enthusiasm when I started. Unfortunately the honest truth is that it hasn’t really worked – working alone in an office isn’t a lot better than working alone at home. So I’ll be moving out over the next few weeks, and by early August CartoonChurch HQ will be no more. It is a bit sad as I had high hopes, but that is the way things go.

On the plus side I am now working at the Church Times in London, which I enjoy doing. I wasn’t doing this when I first began working at my HQ. I plan, for a while at least, to go into London one extra day a week (so three days in total) and do some of my cartooning there.

In the next few weeks I have to do quite a lot of getting rid of things, both from the office and from home, as space needs to be made for a lot of cartooning paraphernalia. If anyone is interested in two simple wooden Ikea desks with metal legs, an under-desk filing cabinet, a very laid back Ikea Poang chair, a very basic office chair, lots of Christian books / Bible commentaries or indeed any of my other possessions let me know. All to be picked up from Basildon, 15 minutes from the M25. I’ll post photos and possibly eBay links here at some point. I could also do with shifting a large number of greetings cards and some cartoon canvasses, but in a way that doesn’t involve me having to post them, which is the thing I don’t have time to do. Any thoughts on any of the above welcomed.

Yes, there will be a loss to the local economy as CartoonChurch.com pulls out of Basildon. I quite often spent £1.99 on a meal deal at Asda.

I *don’t mind* your leaving CartoonChurch HQ as long as your work continues, but would really feel bereft – together with your other fans – if you abandoned either cartoons or blog. But if you have concluded you need the stimulus of company to come up with creative ideas, you would be in good historic company….(eg Impressionists and all the ‘school of’ writers)

phew! read headline as “goodbye cartoon church”… relieved to see it’s only the office that is going

  4. chris clark says:

Hope the extra day at CT helps Dave. Keep going.

I suppose it would be churlish to point out the box is upside down? Perhaps if you stood on your head more you would find it easier..or is there something in there that is fargile and needs to be inverted?

  5. sarahw says:

I too noticed the upside down box – but assumed it had been placed upside down on purpose. If you look closely you will see that the bottom (top) is not sealed and therefore I suspect it is empty…
Of course it could be sealed (badly) in which case I would urge caution in picking it up.
Might be interested in a desk – can you send a picture and dimensions?

  6. Tim Abbott says:

Maybe, as an extension of the idea to inhabit the CT office for an extra day a week, you could occasionally install yourself for a day in other fine offices where you would not be alone. Cartoonist in residence for the day, or the Cartoon Church tour. I am strongly of the opinion that this could either work really well or really badly. Also, the coffee might be very good or very bad.

  7. Margaret says:

You are welcome to spend a day at our offices – although whether sitting amongst accountants would help or hinder your creative juices is for you to decide.

Its a bit if a trek from Basildon to leafy Oxfordshire, can’t speak for the quality of the coffee but the tea’s great!

  8. Loo says:

It is easy enough to commute from Basildon, I am sure the train journey will increase the content of your observations alone.

I did wonder if the 19yr old hacker was one of my babies and was not sure whether to be proud or not. I often wonder what the future holds for that precious offspring I helped into the world of Essex. Indeed would Moo have sung at Chelmsford Cathedral instead of Ripon? I which case were patent black shoes worn under the surplus?

I guess to put it bluntly, only God knows where we end up, and then how we are used. All the best for your move and your creative juices. Still feel ‘men only’ groups can offer some material.

    God Bless,
    Lorraine

  9. Maddy says:

Phew – as above – just glad to hear it’s a physical move rather than a goodbye. It’s always productive to spend time with other creative people but they do say that ‘moving’ is one of the major stressors so don’t forget to breathe.

  10. The Laughing Housewife says:

You could courier the stuff – much cheaper than Parcelforce and they collect from you.

Good luck with the new venture.

  11. Chris Kidd says:

You worried me for a moment, I thought that it was “goodbye cartoon church” so I’m glad to hear that it’s only an office move.

If you’re looking for places to get rid of the poang chair or books to I’d love to help take them off your hands!
