Night walker slippers

slippers with in-built headlights for night time walking

Part two of my detailed and in-depth travel diary. Today I saw some slippers with built in LED lights for night time walking.

These, as I see it, are the future of the slipper. The promotional material says that they are ‘ideal for those late night bathroom visits’, but I’d say the possibilities are endless. Undertaking nocturnal obstacle courses, reading a book by slipperlight, apprehending any night time criminals making their approach crawling along on the carpet, the list goes on.

Please use the comment section below to put forth your opinion as to the merits of slippers with headlights. Please respect those with opposing views as I can see this being a contentious topic.

  1. The Church Mouse says:

I imagine cyclists could strap them to the front of their bikes for after dark rides, then they would also have some comfy footwear ready when they arrive at their destination.

  2. ari_1965 says:

I would not wear these slippers. If I did, family members could find me in the house at night. I don’t want them to find me. They’d just ask me to do things, like iron shirts or make tea or explain the Nicene Creed.

  3. Dave says:

Mouse, I think you’re largely wasted blogging on church matters. The cycling fraternity would do well to pay attention to your innovative and refreshing views.

  4. Dave says:

ari_1965, I’m sure the slippers could somehow be used to explain the Nicene Creed. Do you find you have many such requests for night time explanations?

As an aside, the page about the (unlit) papal slippers is here. I may sent to details of these night time slippers to the Vatican for their consideration.

  5. Moyra says:

After squinting at the small print, I find these slippers need batteries. I fear the chances of me remembering to switch the slippers prior to a middle of the night stumble to the bathroom are limited. No, lets amend that. Non-existent.

  6. LS says:

Some things on the floor at night you don’t want to see.

  7. Miffy says:

These would be just the thing for Greenbelt! Warm, comfy, oh so useful for those late night trips to the campsite loos, and, thanks to the memory foam, no chance of getting lost on the way back to your tent.

    A work of genius!

  8. Sara from the library says:

Night Walker could sound a bit like a detective/ superhero relation of yours. Or, on the other thought, an unsavory activity. Either way not something I associate with slippers. My first thought on seeing this was “Are these for real?” as I’m sure I’ve seen adverts for similar in Private Eye

  9. John says:

I’m unsure about the packaging to this

    a) The light ‘beams’ on the slippers look far too close to CGI to be a real representation

    b) There is something amusing about the ‘as seen on Tv’ sticker when it goes on to say ‘in some countries’.

However putting that aside I cannot imagine it is more than an LED in the front. Since these are clearly night-ware can you get a special version that bleeps and reminds you to put the seat down afterwards or ones that miaow to remind you to put the cat out?

However, product development aside – Dave – did you buy a pair and can you report back? are they like lighthouses or tea lights?

  10. chris clark says:

I think there should be an ecclesiastical variation with leds at the back so monks who have to do the night vigils can follow one another more easily.

I think a pair with those reversing proximty detectors in would also be helpful as they would then squeek and warn you of appraoching objects (yes I know you think you are moving not the object but uncle Albert says there is no way of telling which is which)

  11. Jan Dean says:

The dust bunnies under the radiator
    shiver and shake in fear.
They know their days are numbered
    Now toe-searchlight beams are here….

  12. LizC says:

Having just signed up for a 24 hour walk that’ll involve a large amount of night walking, these would be perfect, except that I feel they wouldn’t support my feet adequately.

Maybe I need those trainers for children with flashing lights in them…

  13. Liz from the sewing room says:

The instructions say we have to life the sole (sic) to switch on the battery. Are we supposed to do this lifting of the soul by singing, praying, liturgically dancing???? This could wake the rest of the household who in my house, would turn all the lights on, removing the need for the slippers.

  14. Maddy says:

Oh good grief – the answer to my prayers – that will be the very last time I fall down the stairs in the dark. What a bargain, what a coup – thank you so much for this timely and foot warming post.

  15. Dave says:

Really enjoying all of the comments on this subject. To reply to one or two:

Moyra – you’re right, some kind of dynamo would perhaps be worth thinking about for Mk 2.

Sara – I can assure you that these are real. Available from TJ Hughes Eastbourne and other good retailers. Well, other retailers. Also Amazon link above.

John – I didn’t, but I really hope someone does and reports back.

Chris – reversing sensors. Something for Mk 3.

LizC – (aside, slightly cheeky) I’ve often looked for a 24 hour walk without a large amount of night walking. Frustratingly never been able to find one.

Someone on the Facebook page asked about dipping the lights for oncoming slipper traffic. Something for the Mk 4 version perhaps.

  16. Crimperman says:

The lights may be too low for “bathroom visits” to be really effective (especially for the gentlemen among us.

However hope is at hand in the form the toilet night light:

  17. Phill says:

This is a good idea in principle, but how long will it be before some kids get hold of those and trick them out with low-rider tyres, a huge soundsystem and… erm, LED lights. OK, maybe not. As you were.

  18. Elizabeth says:

Hmmm, Crimperman. Not too sure my, ahem, nether regions would appreciate being lit up by the dayglo Toilet Night Light…although maybe they could be persuaded to programme the lights to follow liturgical colours…..

  19. Alison U says:

I seem to remember these slippers, or something very like them, from the late lamented (by me anyway) ‘Innovations’ catalogue, from the 1980′s -does anyone else remember it? It used to be full of daft products that no one in their right mind would buy and they were often ordinary items that had a dual, (redundant) function, like slippers with a built in night light, or a toaster that told you the time (not sure that was a real one, but you get the picture.) Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders once did a marvellous sketch parodying the Innovations catalogue products, in which all their possessions had these dual functions and they appalled when they found something in the house that was just what it was, a table or something that simply was a table.
That aside, does anyone else think the name ‘Night Walker’ is a bit creepy? i have visions of zombies or similar wandering the streets of our cities illuminating their way with LED slippers – help!
