How to be selected as a member of the clergy

discernment process

For a larger more readable version click here: the discernment process.

This is another from the latest book. It took a certain amount of research and talking to people if I remember correctly, and I’m sure it bears no relation to reality, but I quite like it. The final result turned out to be a bit more detailed than intended so had to be printed at a larger size thereby causing all sorts of minor problems.

If you’d like to print this in a parish magazine / presentation / handout in the hope of persuading people to be ordained then this link has information about how to do so.

The Chelmsford Diocese used this at the Audley End weekend for people who are currently in the discernment process (including myself).

I’m not looking forward to the physical challenges at the selection conference I’m going to in March. Perhaps I should have told the bishop I know the contents of the ‘So, you want to be ordained’ leaflet.

  2. Steve says:

I hadn’t considered ordination as I have a full repertoire of excuses. I was however almost recuited by a nearby vicar. I got as far as talking to my five year old son about it and he said he couldn’t let me do it as he wouldn’t see much of me any more as I would be too busy. I asked him if we were talking about the same thing…

I am glad I dont feel called to ordination. What these 39 articles – is it a sort of Kim’s Game as per Scouts, Guides, Psychology degree, where you look at a tray of articles for a short time, then they remove them and you have to name them all? Seems an odd thing for ordination discernment, unless of course, it is to assess your ability to remember people’s names.
