Why I had to get my own office

evie on paper

Come on now, you can’t complain. I haven’t posted any cat photos since 2007 (don’t check).

Evie sits on the pile of paper in my home office. Yes, that is the original artwork for the cover of ‘The Exciting World of Churchgoing‘. She sits on the documents in the hope that a game of ‘cord’ will be forthcoming. ‘Cord’ is a game involving a piece of cord. It is similar to another game called ‘ribbon’, which owing to constraints of time and space I don’t have time to explain.

This is the reason I needed my own office – to stop such diversions using up my precious time. In my job it is important that one is able to stare out of the window at the traffic on the dual carriageway without any distractions.

(Do tell me when writing that gets tiresome)

    Some time in August 2026

  2. Kathryn says:

I saw this and thought, “You had to get an office to put your cat in? Is your family allergic? Hey, if I get an office away from home, can I have a cat?”

  3. DaviGoss says:

Almost 30 years ago my Director of Ordinands, the late, much loved and Venerable George Timms, was devoted to his cats. It was not unknown to see cats in the sanctuary at his church. When I went to see him about my selection conference he placed my papers on his desk where he could see them. However one of his cats promptly came and sat on them. George was clearly reluctant to disturb the cat and therefore had to manage without being able to refer to the written word!

  4. Evan says:

We have two cats and five kittens. The kittens have some little games they call “feet”, which tend to turn into a game of “legs”. These games aren’t so much games per se as attempts to destroy the giant two legged beasts they live with.

  5. Rachael says:

Our cat Pomfret used to enjoy a complex game called ‘sock hand’.
Unfortunately that wasn’t enough for him and he indulged in ‘dodge the car’. He was sadly inept.
    RIP Pomfret

weren’t there two cats? I’m worried now as I think what may have happened to mornie (evensong and morning prayer or something?)

I love this picture! I get the same/similar ‘problem.’ Wonderful creatures cats!

  8. Dave says:

Chris – rest assured the other one is fine. I’d post a picture of her but people might say unkind things as she is a little… large.

  9. Anne says:

Our church has a cat on the staff. Her name is Sophia (Wisdom), and I believe she functions as clergy counselor and head of the welcoming committee. She is a grayish-brown tabby who had been in a few fights before settling down into church work.

  10. Maddie says:

Anne, sounds like a classic conversion story. Does she share her testimony?

  11. Captain Rugeley says:

Presumably rather inhibits any work involving a mouse …

  12. Loo says:

Fancy a job swap? I run a busy labour ward, and could do with staring out of a window for a bit

  13. Clare says:

And does Sophia also teach cat-echism?

  14. Richard Gillin says:

I wish we had a cat in our office. On the occasions I work from home, our Phoebe likes to bat the keyboard drawer back in so you need to play with her rather than type!
