My new office

cartoonchurch office

I’ve been thinking for years about finding somewhere other than home to work, and it looks as if that is finally going to happen. Over the last few weeks the drive to be somewhere other than the third bedroom has intensified, and so I’ve been looking with renewed energy for an office to rent. The news is that this afternoon I have ‘reserved’ an office in an industrial estate here in the town of Basildon.

This doesn’t sound very exotic, but for me it is all rather exciting. I’ve got really quite a good deal on the unit, and it is an ‘easy in / easy out’ office, which means that I’m not committed to a long lease but can see how it goes on a trial basis. I can stay as little as 12 weeks if I choose before returning to the third bedroom or finding somewhere more to my liking if this doesn’t work for whatever reason.

The office is way bigger than I need – 250 square feet as compared with my current office at home which is 54 square feet. 54 square feet is a bit small given various boxes of cards, canvasses and materials that are currently cluttering up the house, but 100 would probably be plenty. I’m therefore going to need to think of something to do with the rest of the space. I’ve had a few ideas on Twitter this afternoon (thank you), but I’m thinking perhaps a big sofa so that visitors can come and watch me work (from the comfort of a big sofa). (Put SS14 3BB into your favourite journey planning website to find out how long it would take you.)

The office is attached to and run by ‘Safestore’ in Basildon, so if it all gets too much I can always put myself in storage for a while.

By the way, before anyone comments I need two desks. When inspiration doesn’t strike at one I will move to the other.

  2. Jackie says:

I totally understand about the desk thing. When I’m in uni the guy I share an office with is currently away on fieldwork which means I have an office with 2 desks, it’s brilliant and has made a bit difference to productivity. I use his desk for writing and chin-scratching, and my desk for using the computer.

  3. David K says:

He Dave, that’s fab, congrats! I’m sure your productivity will skyrocket (no pressure!).

    :-)

  4. Kate says:

According to my favourite journey planning website, you’ve got a very handy caff as well. Splendid!

  5. Dave says:

Jackie – Yes, one for the computer and one for drawing, packing up things to post etc etc is the idea.

David – Something needs to happen…

Kate – do tell me more. I haven’t yet found such a thing!

  6. Dave says:

I have found the cafe. I see from Streetview they do breakfast for 2.99.

  7. Ian says:

Sounds, and looks, great; and hurrah for cafes and good food and good prices.

  8. Russ says:

Looks to me like you could rent space out, Dave, to:
    * the youth club table tennis team
    * the church flag wavers
    * vicars who want to come and play on their iPhones in peace

Or you could just play the mad artist in his studio with drawings the size of half a house. Or just order in some ferociously large pencils.

  9. Tractor Girl says:

    Looks cool

  10. chris clark says:

Were just in the process of down-sizing so it is really good to know that in the bigger scheme of things balance will be maintained.

Will there be a grand opening with baloons and cake and canapies with speeches from local dignitaries, worthies and clergy?

  11. Anne says:

I have two desks in my office–or rather, two tables. One houses the computer, telephone, and all that gear. The other is piled high with beads and projects. My infrequent guests sit in a comfortable rocking chair.

  12. Eliza says:

YOu could always let the spare space out to youth workers for those many boxes of random objects they have around labelled “prayer resources”.

  13. Andrew gray says:

I have 3 rooms, computer with art tablet, and the dining room table… And I still go to starbucks for inspiration. So two desks is quite reasonable. I would happily rent some cartoonist/illustration space from you, though Preston, Lancashire to Basildon is a little bit far for a commute. Personally I like lots of people around me when I draw. Especially people looking over my shoulder. The other day I was happily scribbling an old steam engine in Manchester science museum. A mum saw me and told her little sweetums, ‘look darling, there’s an inventor drawing engines to get ideas for his new invention.’ it must have been the Lawrence lewellyn bowan shirt and jacket I was wearing!

  14. Z says:

    Three bedrooms, eh? There’s posh.

  15. TimT says:

You worked in the third bedroom? That must have been fun when there were guests around. ‘Oh, don’t worry about me, I’m just drawing pictures, keep on sleeping/reading/performingprivatebedroomactivitieswithyourspouseing.’ Maybe now you have an office of your own they can come and sit in while you’re working and do relaxing things like drink cups of tea and have a good old natter about things, just to turn the tables as it were.

  16. Dave says:

I’m thinking an office opening party might be a great idea. I don’t know if there are rules about parties. I can reassure them that there will be clergy present so it will all be sober and above board.

Talk of the third bedroom. I know, it sounds boastful to mention that we have such a thing. It is quite small though – about 54 square feet if I remember correctly. There would be no danger of guests being able to fit in.

I’m liking the pictures posted by Rachel Andrew (@rachelandrew) of her new office. Sofas. Certainly worth thinking about.

  17. susan s. says:

How far off the ground floor are you? Do you have a view? Does the window face the street?

  18. Eric Davey says:

From what I know of some clergy, why would promising sobriety be believed?
