Shopping list found in carpark of Tesco Langdon Hills, 3 Nov ‘09

I’ve got all sort of exciting things to post here before too long, but I thought I’d get back into the way of things by borrowing an idea from a talk I attended by the Illustrationist David Shrigley, that of posting shopping lists found lying around in and around the supermarket.

I thought it might be interesting to discuss and analyse this first list, found at about 7.30pm today in the car park of Tesco, Langdon Hills, Essex.

I am particularly interested to know what SK is, and what the lacquer was for, and whether ‘tenna’ was a cashback reminder.

If this goes well I will encourage the further posting of found shopping lists.

    More interesting is what aisle is the petrol kept in?

    Of course we could also debate the ethics of driving to a large branch of Tesco’s, and therefore needing to buy petrol, to buy such a short list of grocery items which they could probably have bought at a corner shop, saving money on petrol and a lot of queuing time at Tesco’s. But then we should also have compassion on this poor person who is unfortunate enough to bank at the Halifax and so is probably still recovering from the shock of nearly losing their money last year.

    Indeed, Peter, but since many petrol stations have closed, there may not be an alternative to Tesco’s. I usually cycle to the local shops, but when I need petrol I drive to the Co op and shop before I fill up, because shopping there also gives a fuel discount.

    I appreciate the correct spelling of lacquer when, whatever tenna is, it’s not spelt right.

    Any birdwatcher knows that SK stands for siskin, so it is a reminder to look for them in the trees in the car park. He/she would have been so busy looking upwards that they did not notice they had dropped the shopping list – and maybe the tenna as well.

    I remember when there used to be cartoons on this blog… is the introduction of a random, slightly suspicious shopping list a distraction technique? If so, it’s fun to be distracted… Does anyone else think that they may be making bread and butter pudding? All that milk, bread and eggs? By why the lacquer??

    I think this shopping list was probably dropped (hopefully inadvertently) by a middle aged, overweight lady driver who cares about her hair – hence the need for Tena Lady pads, Special K, hair lacquer and petrol. I like to think she has a family, for whom she is buying bread, milk, eggs, cream and butter (or maybe she’s making a cake for the church Christmas fair or the Mother’s Union) with the French stick being a little personal indulgence, with which she will use to make garlic bread. Sound like anyone you know?

    On our side of the pond “SK” is a brand of meat (spelled Esskay). Always makes me think of wonderful breakfast sausages and other pork products.

    Mouse suspects that the list was left by a highly organised thug. He was off to buy some breakfast items requested by his mother, but to show his rebellious side he added a reminder to steal the kedgeree “SK”. This explains why it is the only item in code, and for the extraordinarily rude item ‘F-Stick’.

    I too am interested in knowing what the F-stick is and what it could be used for. Seriously though, its most definitely a French stick!
