Cartoon information gathering

A huge thank-you to the people who have suggested ideas over the last couple of weeks. You might have noticed one or two from the lists appearing and there are more on the way.

If anyone has any inside insights into the following topics then any contributions would be welcomed:

1. Unusual or interesting arrangements for covering services over the summer holidays
2. Things that happen in the vestry in the final moments before the service starts
3. The Anglican selection process. In the past someone has given me information about this, but I can’t remember where or when. It would be useful to know the different steps one has to go through in order to be ordained. Any online resources that explain it clearly welcomed.

    Hmm. Strangest vestry goings-on that I can remember happened while I was in college. I was there at 6:45 one Wednesday morning preparing for the 7 a.m. early Communion when I discovered that there was no wine. The rector handed me his keys and suggested I hit the local all-night beer/wine/cigarettes store for a bottle of whatever looked most dignified. I had to tell him that I was underage, and this place wasn’t going to make exceptions. He had to go himself, and he made it back on time–but just barely. Running out of wine has a certain basis in Scripture, but nowadays it’s a liturgical faux pas.

    Here is a simplified version of the process. The diagram in the file linked to from there is more realistic.

    Here are the official selection criteria, though of course very few of them are actually well-defined and it all comes down to the interpretation of the people doing the interviewing.

    Bishops are of course free to ignore what anyone else has said during the process and to decide for themselves…

    In the vestry: trying to get the choir in the right order to process in – occasionally like herding cats in a small space with a few people still trying to struggle into robes!

    Finding/making a dog collar (the magazine with the widest white margin works well…)

    Before the service: priest tries to find specs; search for batteries for mikes which are not dead; introvert priest sits and prays trying not to look irritated by extrovert priest entertaining the altar servers with amusing anecdotes; handwashing with antibacterial gel which takes an hour to dry.

    My husband has been known to commandeer the margarine container to cut an insert for his dog collar.
