I have been blocked from making Facebook notes

facebook note abuse

I have written 7 ‘notes’ on Facebook during the last month, which the website owners consider ‘abuse’ as they have blocked me from posting any more. I had been using a facility whereby when you write blog posts they are imported into Facebook as notes, but it is obviously intended only for very occasional users. The help page:

Unfortunately, Facebook cannot provide any specifics on the rate limits that we enforce. Please know, however, that the speed at which you are acting and the sheer number of actions you have made are both taken into account.

It is true that when I was updating this blog daily my notes were at the rate of about one a day. Perhaps I am being disciplined retrospectively.

As punishment for the sheer number of my sins my Facebook notemaking powers have been removed and the red ‘you’ve been naughty’ sign above pops up to remind me of my guilt whenever I try to look as notes that anyone else has written. As an additional reprimand notes from others do not show up in my feed at all.

I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise to everyone for the misery that my excessive notemaking has obviously caused. I will, in order to spare everyone further unhappiness, refrain from posting any more notes from this day onwards. Assuming i can work out how to turn them off of course.

That seems a little harsh… maybe what they mean is that they’ve disabled people who use these sorts of external applications (given that you can, I think, get Facebook to do it itself these days).

I certainly know of people who post far more notes than this with impunity!

  2. Ian McKenzie says:

That is quite odd. I use the automated function to create FB notes from my blog posts. I write at least one per day and sometimes more. As yet, I have not been blocked. I have read stories of others being blocked, but the “rate limits” in question tend to number in the hundreds or even thousands.

  3. Bishop Alan Wilson says:

Blimey, Dave! Wotcha been upta? I’ve been trying to work out how to get my facebook page to carry a single panel with my latest blog post. Thing is, I’m too dim to work out how to do it! But it sounds as though even if I managed, I’d get done by the FB thought police?

  4. Ann says:

Craziness - are sure the group that is on you about supporting the bookstores isn’t behind this?

  5. Jeremy says:

In the circumstances, I feel you have got off very lightly. There are clearly only so many notes available, and you have quite blatantly filled your boots with this precious natural resource. Why? In pursuit of glamour and glory. Are fame and wealth not enough? Does the cry of the noteless mean nothing to you? Each posted note was like the hammer blow of injustice to the un-noted. You have been made an example: let others take note. If there’s one left to take.

  6. Clare says:

I too have been blocked from writing Facebook notes… except that I have never ever written any. I suspect that they, like your good self, have had website problems.

  7. Dave says:

Richard - the note thingummy is an internal device. I do use Friendfeed for posting some of my other stuff.

Ian - so it must just be my particular sort of notes.

Bishop Alan - there must be a widget. Note to anyone reading - can you recommend a widget?

    Ann - I can’t really comment there.

Jeremy - I think you’re right. I’ve been using notes like there’s no tomorrow.

Clare - do you think that’s it? I really would like it to be website problems.

  8. Richard says:

Facebook does seem to have some pretty random policies at times - various big names have been blocked or restricted from time to time.

I don’t tend to use the notes facility at all, but generate a great load of rubbish interesting content through the FriendFeed application. There is some doubling up on that as I’m also running an app called Wordbook that does a similar job to the notes feature you’ve been using in that it pulls in blog posts to my news feed. It should allow you to do much the same as you have been, but hopefully without annoying Facebook. Bad news is that it’s Wordpress only, so no help to Bishop Alan.

Another option that might work is the import feature which you’ll find on the drop down menu above the box where you set your status on your profile page - that has an import RSS option, alongside imports for a couple of other big sites. I’ve tended to avoid that as I prefer the news feed items that the FriendFeed application produces.

  9. Sarah says:

what were you using to import blog posts?

There is a little application called Wordbook that does it automatically (for a lovely wordpress blog such as this one), although I’m not sure what its posting limits are, and it isn’t working as well since the new facebook broke it, but it does still work. In fact it’s my favourite application, after Tetris of course ;)

  10. Russ says:

Hmmm, I’ve just set up my Facebook so that it pulls in blog posts. Will have to see if my posting quotient is considered abusive. Or just my poems …

  11. Chris Clark says:

I think this just adds to your coolness Dave. Its the cyberspace equivalent of an ASBO.

Hey “I know someone who’s been dissed by Facebook- cool.”

PS I realise cool is probably not a cool word anymore but I find it hard to keep up…

  12. Cartoon Blogger apologizes for excessive Facebook notage | blogs4God says:

Facebook users can now sleep sounder and safer as the service’s proprieters have finally done something about the notorious Cartoon Blogger (aka Dave Walker) posting seven, yes folks count them, 7 notes! …

  13. veritas says:

I joined a group that said, “I don’t like the new Facebook”. Enough said.

  14. Steve Hearn says:

…that’s odd as my blog is important everyday into my facebook site, just like yours as explained but I have never had a warning message like this?

  15. David Keen says:

At least they’re not threatening to sue you for libel….

Maybe you exceeded the limit for humour?

  16. Phil Groom says:

You are just a very notey boy, Dave, and notey people get SLAPped. But I’m sure someone with your skill and ability can turn it into a cartoon…

  17. Matt Wills says:

I import notes on a daily basis too. Maybe this is a hiny we should allo go back to the old fashioned way of writing with a pen…

  18. Spike says:

    Dave

Stop being naughty and do as the red box tells you - click and go home!

  19. Matt Wardman says:

Good job they still acknowledge that you exist.

Unlike … er … Steve Webb MP who was banned for impersonating himself.

Googling “facebook notes blocked” got me here. I was blocked, too, after writing a humongous amount of notes - 37 altogether since January, and the last 10 from an outside blog (mine!), within the last 6 weeks (more than a note a week - ghaasp!).

No warnings before the red pop up alert. However a couple of days earlier I noticed that my import-setting had mysteriously disappeared (maybe I got banned for importing the same terrible blog AGAIN). However, since the block I have deviously imported one more note using the direct import tool on my profile (bet this hideous crime will get me banned completely).

  21. ellen says:

I think it may well be going to happen to me very soon because my note imports from my blog have stopped appearing! However, there is no warning or reasoning for this. It is all very mysterious.

  22. Charles Walmsley says:

It all comes from being so clever. I wouldn’t know how to start to do all the things you do on Facebook. Perhaps they fear your intelligence!

best wishes from all of us in sleepy Cookham

  23. Phil Groom says:

I wrote to facebook support about this. They sent me an autoresponse that didn’t answer my question so I wrote back. Received this reply today (my previous message below). So they are listening. Sort of…

Hi and thanks for the rapid response. Unfortunately the points below don’t address my issue, which is your block on Dave Walker’s ability to post notes. Dave hasn’t abused the system: he’s not that kind of guy; so please remove the block you’ve placed on him.

    Thanks very much,

    Phil

They are always telling me on YouTube that I have been making too many comments when I rave about all the fantastic jazz videos on there!!!( Dave Grusin NY Big Band featuring Michael Brecker, oh my goodness!!!) I have to wait a few minutes and then it is OK. I LOVE notey folk!! I have one notey aunt, aged 88, to whom I write regularly. It is truly wonderful to get a long letter by post. Cheers!! Your site is very fine! Happy Fall!
Oh, here is a Fall poem from SF Chronicle:
    No bird
    NO bee
    No leaf on tree
    No wonder!!!
    November! :)

Dont worry. I’m sure it counts a a venial sin (whatever that is), and not a cardinal sin. LOL

  26. Phil Groom says:

Hey Dave - you haven’t been blocked from Cartoon Church as well have you? Seems to have been a while even for a not-quite-daily blog ;)

  27. Ed... says:

Same thing happened to me when I started importing my
http://caughtnottaught.blogspot.com/ blog over. I suppose it’s just poor coding rather than electronic fascism.

    ED…

  28. David Keen says:

Are you okay Dave? I’m starting to get worried that your mojo has joined the Diocese of Sydney, or something. Or maybe you’re just keeping us all on tenterhooks before releasing a new book.

Anyway folks, whilst the cat’s away, any suggestions for cartoon topics?

  29. rain says:

    Congratulations, Dave!
DWeaver mentioned on his blog that you were noticed on PCWorld… and just wanted to say whoop-whoop for being dull :)
