Presenting a cartoon to the Archbishop of Canterbury

presenting cartoon

This afternoon I had the opportunity to present a cartoon canvas to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams. The cartoon is ‘the parish system‘. The Archbishop has visited my cartoon tent on several occasions over the course of the Lambeth Conference and this was one picture that he had enjoyed.

As you may have picked up I am a great fan of the Archbishop, so to be given this chance was a highlight of what has already been for me a really quite overwhelming conference. The handing over of the canvas was originally planned for 14.30 in the cartoon tent, but in light of the Archbishop’s time commitments today the venue was moved to his flat / office and the time to 16.50. My wife and one of the official conference photographers came with me. The picture makes it look as if part of the image is missing, but that is just the sunlight shining behind the canvas.

Tomorrow is the final plenary session followed by a service in Canterbury Cathedral. I go home on Monday.

  1. Ruth says:

I’m really delighted for you, Dave. As a long-time reader of your blog and “enjoyer” (!) of your cartoons, I’m really pleased that things are going so very well for you. You deserve it.

  2. Neil says:

Was it a more exciting meeting for Dave, or for the Archbishop?

  3. Sarah B says:

What a great picture! I’m not sure which one of you looks more pleased.

  4. Ian says:

How absolutely wondrous! I am so happy for you Dave and, as Ruth commented above, well deserved.

  5. Stephen says:

I am, of course, hugely delighted for Dave that his work has been recognised in this way.

In passing, though, I am slightly concerned that the link Dave has kindly provided in the report above is to a slightly different version of the cartoon than that which was presented to Uncle Rowan. (This is a loose term of affection rather than an admission of any known genetic relationship. In real life I have never met the man, or his beard). I could tell this because the shape of parishes on the map part of the cartoon is different.

I was wondering whether the text below the cartoon had been altered too, whether certain bits had been changed or added as a mark of personal respect? After all, the last thing I would want to do would be to give an Archbishop a cartoon which might cause him, in a moment of later reflection, to take even the very mildest amount of umbrage. Not that there’s much danger of that ever happening in my case; I can’t draw for toffee, or indeed for any other form of confection.

Best wishes and congratulations once again,

    Stephen.

  6. Chris Clark says:

Didn’t he make you an area cartoonist or something?

    Good for you Dave.

Keep it up post Lambeth…I think the press in general have given up on it as there wasn’t the fight and falling out they were hoping for..

  7. Bob Gould says:

Superb! All I can ask is, who’s that in the p[icture with Dave Walker – ah, I see you’ve told us. And thank you so much for keeping us cheered up during the meeting. You’ve done a great job.

  8. Ian M says:

I have never before noticed the similarity in fuzziness of hair between ++Dave Williams and Rowan Walker.

Must be a result of all that religious cleverness – fries the follicles.

  9. David Keen says:

Fantastic, well done Dave, it sounds like you’ve done a wonderful job at the conference.

  10. jody says:

I am a great fan both of the archbishop and of you Dave – perhaps I can draw a rather bad cartoon on a napkin someday and present it to both of you ;-) , it won’t be quite the same thing tho….

  11. Kate says:

Lovely! And you do indeed both looked chuffed to bits with the meeting.

It’s one of my fave cartoons too. The Archbishop clearly has excellent taste!

  12. Steve Hearn says:

Well done Dave! You must give me all the gossip when you get back to Church. Trust the easel has worked out fine for you?

  13. Russ says:

I think the only thing that would round this splendid event off in even greater style would be if His Rowan-ness could pen a small cartoon bringing humorous insight into the world of cartooning, and present it to Dave.

    Then they’d be quits.

  14. ellen says:

    congrats to you (both)!
