The evolution of a worshipper 08

The 2008 remix of my ‘Evolution of a worshipper‘ cartoon appears in this month’s ‘Christianity Today‘ magazine:

evolution of a worshipper

As you can see this version has ‘emergent guy’ with his goatee, glasses and headphones.

It has been interesting to see the reactions to the cartoon in the various places where it has been mentioned, including:

Hey Dave, nice to meet you, sort of, I guess, in that internet kind of way. Thanks for claiming the cartoon. I wasn’t sure where it came from. Great cartoon, by the way!

  2. Ben Sternke says:

We had a lively discussion about an earlier version of the cartoon on my blog a few months ago, too.

  3. BLDAVIS.ORG » Evolution of the modern evangelical worshipper says:

I ran across this cartoon somewhere on the web while browsing. I thought it pretty funny. I started my own journey in the middle, or perhaps maybe as the guy with his hands in his pockets sans iPod. [afternote: here’s the original from the artist] …

UPDATE: This cartoon — I am not surprised — turns out to be another fine example of Dave Walker’s work. Apparently, his nose must have been twitching, because he’s tracked down a number of blogs that have made use of this cartoon, mostly without citing him as the creator. I’m happy to give the correct attribution now. Sorry, Dave, for not getting it right the first time, and thanks for your generosity of spirit and your great work. …

  5. Scott Gunn says:

Dave, I’m glad you tracked down all theses uses, including my little blog. I should have suspected it was your work. I’m glad to give credit where credit is due. Sorry I didn’t get it the first time. Thanks for all your great work on the interwebs.

I’m also glad you’re drawing for the Lambeth Conference. Hope to see you there.

    Pax,

  6. Yorkshireman Displaced says:

    Nice work Dave,

I think I’m slightly to the left of beardy emergent guy but I’m starting to see the appeal of liturgy argh!

  7. Lexie says:

I definately started out with arms aloft. Now I am more arms down (actually I am kind of hands tapping out upbeat hymns on the hymnbook!)
The first time I went into an Anglican church I threw my arms in the air (Like first guy) - saw people looking at me in an odd fashion and then pretended to yawn before staring into my hymnbook!

  8. Stuart says:

We used the original (Properly paid for I hasten to add) for the cover of our Theol. college magazine one month, it really did get the questions going. Like, do you have to be reading the Telegraph to be a Anglo-Catholic? and are all lefties charismaniacs and which way is the ‘flow’.?

  9. jenn says:

hey dave, thanks for linking to me! i love this cartoon. i know so many people can relate to it. it’s funny ’cause it’s TRUE! :)

  10. Rachel says:

If the worshipper has a family he could also get taken up with holding babies/toddlers whilst trying to worship, or being lost in worship whilst his offspring distract everyone else.

  11. Tiffer says:

That guy actually is my friend Harry (who is a pioneer stream mixed mode ordinandy type person with a goaty square glasses and headphones)
