Behind the scenes

behind the scenes

You can see a larger version of this cartoon here along with information about using it in your parish magazine and elsewhere.

This cartoon was originally published in the Church Times and can be found in the Dave Walker Guide to the Church published by Canterbury Press, available from good booksellers. Ask the person behind the till – they probably keep it under the desk wrapped in plain brown paper.

Why did I look at this cartoon, and immediately think of Ezekiel 8?!?!

  2. Stuart says:

Now I have to look up Ezekiel 8 Doh!!

  3. Stuart says:

what? go in and see the vile abominations they are committing there???

Aha! This explains where the new ecological advice is coming from, committee meetings with The Wombles!

When I saw the part about the 70s praise books it reminded me of our church – I noticed when I first arrived 2 years ago that someone had ‘raised the profile’ of some photos of soldiers the community had unfortunately lost to the war by stacking aload of Mission Praise Hardbacks underneath them! Classic!

Last year we did a survey of our building and grounds to see what needed to be done. We asked the children to do the same thing. Along with bog standard things like “The front of the church is scary” and “Can we paint the walls cheerful?” and “We need chocolates all the time”, they suggested we needed a tunnel that begins under the food table in the coffee hour room and runs to a secret children’s playroom under the front garden.
I am sooooo going to plunk down my 3 pounds (sorry, no pound sign on my U.S. computer!) and buy the rights to this cartoon! The children will be gratified that this is now gospel. (as in, If Dave draws it, it is gospel.)

Had another (but a little less silly) thought on this, well it is Lent you know!

Kind of like the Church in parts of China and the ‘Middle East’ this, though there the Vicars/leaders spend their day off above ground – and the other 6 days in the Underground.

(Recommended pause for time of reflection, whilst music with suitably serious tone is played.)

This has resonance. The outside world is in precisely the position of not understanding 90% of it.

I think you should follow this theme with

    a) A “welcome wallchart” (A1 or A2 size?) for use in churches so that churches can fill in who who everyone is for newcomers, contacts for different groups etc. Friendly, funny and unthreatening.

    b) Something explaining all the bits that the world outside doesn’t see in a church. They only see a church, a vicarage and a graveyard. Emphasize that congregations are made up of humans.

One for someone like CPO to publish?

    Just thinking.
