Looking forward

looking forward

Someone has noted in the comments that they are having problems making the Paperless Christmas advent calendar play.

I think it a shame when things like this are designed without an option for the large percentage of people who either (a) Can’t view videos because they are at work or somewhere else it is inappropriate (b) Don’t have a computer that will play videos (c) Don’t have broadband.

It is the same for the newly launched hopeinfo.co.uk site which is the main website for the main church-type-outreach of 2008. It’s great for those that can see it, but what about those who can’t?

Good point Dave re HopeInfo.co.uk. We realised we would not be accessible to everyone, but also recognised that we could never reach everyone anyway. According to National Statistics, eighty four per cent of UK households with Internet access had a broadband connection in 2007. Those without internet access can still text HOPE followed by their address to 81025 to receive a Hope pack in the post, or write to FREEPOST MORE HOPE (which goes to us heere at the Christian Enquiry Agency). Hope this helps.

Yes there is digital divide and some people don’t even have a computer!

Ideally we could have a network of buildings around the country where people could get together and think and talk about God. It obviously won’t be as good as cyber meeting but might be a reasonable second best ;-)

Actually (the complainer was me), we do have broadband, which is why I put it down to the conspiracy against Mac Users. Alternatively as a total technophobe I might just have failed to configure my new Firefox update properly or something. Or perhaps there is also a conspiracy against Firefox users.

As the host company for paperless christmas.org I should like to say that it plays on everything Apple from Safari v2 upwards. I know this from ‘bitter’ experience being a Mac user myself. There are now so many browsers, if you count the different versions, that it is impossible to cater for all, and, as you say, necessarily you ‘should’ have broadband. This Advent Calendar is just one of several means of spreading the word, so please forgive the designers and writers for having to work within constraints! It has been a struggle, but well worth it we feel.
    Thank you for your forbearance.
