Holiday photograph

2007 holiday view

This is a holiday snap from our recent trip to here and there. As you can see it is taken from a great height in some sort of an ecclesiastical building where sitting on the right is more popular than sitting on the left. Either that or the person who is employed to put the chairs out on the right was working a bit of overtime.

A small commotion is taking place at the front, whilst at the back a seated man talks to his neighbour, who happens to be standing on a chair. And why not.

I will not tell you the location of these peculiar goings-on immediately so that people whose speciality subject is ‘views of ecclesiastical buildings taken from a great height’ can have their moment of glory in the comments section. There will not be a prize in any real sense.

So, what has been going on since I’ve been away? Tell me something about your life or the world in general to improve my post-vacation morale.

Welcome back. We missed you. And, since you asked, my region finally saw the end of its longest drought on record. It’s pouring down rain and I went outside and just stood in it laughing. High school kids at our parish school were acting like 5 year olds splashing in the puddles. Now that’s a joyful sound!

  2. Lesley says:

well I’ve lost more weight – I now weight 90kg (which is 14 stone 4.5 pounds). I used to be 17 stone (which was 106kg)

Hope you had a nice break.

    its not Rochester is it?

Having a great time completing my CPD log (ah the relief) been to Gym and enjoying Boethius. \tommorrow off to watch and listen to a ridiculously expensive home cinema set up.. London Irish on sunday after leading worship… perfick though I think I’m gonna get asked to do hoovering…

I’ve only been to a few big cathedrals, and I don’t think this is one of them. So I’ll guess that it’s not Chichester, and I know it’s not Salisbury, Winchester or Canterbury.

My life…Amy and I got married one Oct. 6th. Yay!

  5. Aaron says:

That should be “on Oct. 6th”, not “one Oct. 6th.” Years from now we can say, “We got married one Oct. 6th,” but it’s a bit early for that sort of reflection.

Well, raking things up from my university days… It’s gothic…Early English decorated (I think that’s the one I mean – the one with thin pillars and rising lines) with ribbed vaulting over the Triforium. I seem to remember that the dark purbeck marble contrasting with the stone was a really distinctive feature of… and then I can’t remember which one it is!! I could have googled it an pretended I knew but I haven’t… might now though! I think it might be a Willis organ but I can’t see for sure…

I particularly like the curious mini last row on the right with just three chairs – do they race to get in the privileged back row?

  7. Sarah B says:

Darn it! Now I know cos I’ve googled it – really should have got it as I’ve been there! – but I’ll leave for you to reveal …

… I was right about the organ which is VERY SAD!

Well, I can tell that that isn’t The National Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (Washington, DC), but then I think you might have said something about popping over to our side of the pond.

Something is familiar (from photography) about the far end of that nave, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. You didn’t say if this was a cathedral or not. Could you have gone to one of those famous non-cathedrals like St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle or one of the famous old large parish churches in London?

I wish I could better tell which end of the nave the photo was taken from.

I’ve been busy blogging and updating my website for the Episco-curious.

I think Philip of Samaria might be right about Rochester. This looks like a close up of the lower wall at the far end of your photo. And this photo makes it almost certain that you’ve been to Kent’s Rochester Cathedral (and not the miniature golf course version either). I think this or this might show where you were when you took your photo.

It seems that Salisbury has a similar thing with the chairs on the right being more than the chairs on the left. I have the feeling that sometime in the future we might see a cartoon about uneven arrangements of cathedral chairs and/or people standing on cathedral chairs.

    Is it Country Bumpkin UMC?

  11. chris clark says:

    I think its Lincoln…:-)

  12. spoilsport says:

No, not Rochester. I think it’s further north and they might have filmed bits of The Da Vinci Code there.

Self satisfied grin but not a complete spoilsport.

  13. spoilsport says:

Forget that…just read the next blog so my last entry was a bit pointless. Must keep up…

  14. Philip of Samaria says:

OK lincoln it is and was there just a month ago

  15. Michelle says:

I have unpacked a load more boxes and the house is feeling more like home… I don’t know that that fact’ll make any difference to your post-vacation morale but it’s certainly helped mine!

  16. Simon Boswell says:

Mel and I have had a baby daughter girl, Emma Ruth. If this boosts your post-vacation morale by even 10% of how good I’m feeling then I hope you’ll have a very happy day!

  17. Russ says:

We have had an abundance of Conference pears from our tree, Dave, and our passion fruit crop has just about finished. Further fruit bulletins may be available on my Facebook page.

Ah, so who copied who’s blueprints? Lincoln or Rochester?
