Holy Joes, 6th November

I’m going along to Holy Joes in London on Tuesday the 6th of November 2007 to talk and show pictures. I’m writing this here mainly as an advance reminder to self that I have to think of something to say.

Holy Joes is a discussion group sort of thing that meets in the downstairs bit of St Mary Le Bow on Cheapside at 8pm. It was the group founded by Dave Tomlinson among others. He was the man who wrote ‘the Post Evangelical’.

The programme says about my visit: “Dave joins us to show us some of his work and discuss comedy in church … trust us … he finds it in the most unlikely places“. I’m not sure whether that is saying that I find church in the most unlikely of places, comedy in the most unlikely of places, or my work in the most unlikely of places. I certainly do find my work in the most unlikely of places – that is what happens when your filing system is a bit haphazard.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the evening in question. I’ll see one or two of you there perhaps.

I’ll try to make it. But as I live in America, it may be too long for me to cycle.

I had such fun when I was there in the summer (once I’d finished dying of terror) that I’d love to be there…but unlikely. Enjoy :-)

I’ve found church in the most unlikely places before, especially in Britain. Twee little St. Lawrence, squeezed between a load of shops just off Winchester’s High Street, comes to mind. It’s a lovely little church, with a really thoughtful and prayerful rector. I just missed the cathedral Evensong on my first visit to the city, and stumbled on St. L’s where they were just about to begin. I was pleased to have missed the one, because the other was delightful. Not as glorious, of course, but very warm and honest.

Amy and I had a similar experience in Canterbury, in the tiny chapel of what I believe is a Greyfriar’s lodge on (I think) Hospital Ln. Just lovely, electric keyboard and all! Having attended the Eucharist at the cathedral that morning, it was an amazing example of the range of Christian liturgy, all out of the same book!

I’m another American who would love to cycle over, but I think the Atlantic crossing would be a little rough this time of year. ;-)
