Report from the 2007 Christian Blog and Web Awards

We had a splendid time at the Christian Blog and Web Awards last night. The organisers really put on a fantastic event at St Stephen Wallbrook, and I was most impressed. The evening started with champagne and mingling, after which the Bishop of London gave a speech. Hopefully this and other elements of the evening will, before too long, be on the Premier website or on Premier TV, but they aren’t there at the time of writing. The meal was a tasty treat, and then came the awards. These, from memory, were the winners – there are a couple I will need to add:

Best Church Website: King’s Church Manchester
Best Worship Blog or Site: Worship Central
Best Young Christian Blog (for under 25s): Unfurling Flower, by Emily
Most Inspiring Leadership Blog: Unashamed Workman (Thanks to Krish for remembering this)
Most Successful Evangelistic Blog or Site: Rejesus
Best Christian Newcomer Blog: Krish Kandiah (His post about the awards)
Best Christian News and Reviews Site: Christian Today
Best Provision for Youth Blog or Website: Soul Survivor
Best Christian Social Action website: Stop the Traffik
Premier Radio & Premier Online People’s Choice: Mindandsoul.info
Best Creative Christian blog or website: Um… me.

In fact mine was the first award of the evening to be awarded, which was a bit nerve wracking. I gave a short garbled three sentence speech in which (in hindsight) I should have explained what my blog is about. But I did remember to thank my wife and you, the blog commenters, even if I did forget to thank God, Premier and the cats. So, thanks to everyone who has been involved. I received a splendid glass trophy and a present, which is a wireless rabbit. I will look forward to playing with that later.

Here is a picture of me leading everyone in prayer:

The photo was staged after the event as like a fool I checked my camera into the left luggage area before the evening began. I blinked as I always do these days when flash photographed.

I will link to official and other reports of the event as I discover them (see ‘Update’ below). I suspect most people who were there are still having a lie in.

Thanks again to Premier for organising the Awards – I hope they continue and flourish.

  1. Sarah says:

    congratulations! :)

  2. Hennell says:

Congratulations, treasure your trophy and… what exactly is a ‘wireless rabbit’? (I was under the impression all rabbits were already wireless)

  3. Kathryn says:

    Hooray!
But, in my sheltered corner of the world I just have to ask – what is a wireless rabbit?

  4. rosamundi says:

    yay!

  5. Eddie says:

Congratulations! You certainly warrant that award, as the way in which I’ve filched some of your stuff in the past attests!

However, and this isn’t sour grapes because I didn’t get mentioned, I find the categories in these awards rather worrying – not so much what is there, but what isn’t. Nothing on cross cultural missions, nothing on theology and nothing on Biblical studies. These are all domains in which the blogsphere is making a serious impact on the Christian world, it’s a shame that Premier don’t see them as important. :(

  6. Dave says:

I am slightly uncertain about the nature of a Wireless Rabbit myself. I will tell you when I have plugged it in.

Eddie: As far as the categories go – Premier were open to suggestions of new categories when these awards were first announced, and in fact added a couple of categories following discussion on this blog and elsewhere. I’m sure that they would be very pleased to hear suggestions for future events if you were to contact them. Perhaps give them a day or two as the organisers deserve a few days off.

  7. Jeremy says:

    :D

  8. Alan Wilson says:

Dave – Many congratulations — richly deserved. Looks a bit stressful thanking all the people of the world for being themselves, parents, etc. All best for next year, and much lead in your pencil!

  9. si says:

    congratulations – well deserved!

  10. Russ says:

I’d echo Dave’s thoughts, as someone else who was there (on behalf of Inspire magazine, who were runners-up in the News and Reviews website category). The award categories are always likely to be a bit hit and miss the first year, but hopefully will settle down in the years ahead to do justice to the ‘blogosphere’ (and the website world) from a Christian perspective.

The food was good and I was pleased that my £5 dinner suit blended in OK. Hopefully.

  11. Michelle says:

    Wooohoooo! Well deserved!

  12. Sarah B says:

YAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAY! GO Dave! Well done mate!

Wireless rabbit… isn’t that, like, a NORMAL rabbit? Or do normal rabbits have wires… I really should have studied biology more when I was at school!!

  13. Ian says:

    Well done Dave indeed!

  14. Tractor Girl says:

More congratualtions and yaying. Well done, you deserve it :D

  15. Adrian says:

Well done – a much deserved award. We look forward each day to getting your blog here in Spain where we live.

It helps us keep a link with the homeland and all our Christan friends there.

  16. MadPriest says:

    Faustus!

  17. Clare says:

Congratulations. Fantastic. So well deserved too.

I feel that pictures of the wireless rabbit may be required – I suspect I’m not the only person who’s mind has gone down directions unworthy of a Christian blog.

  18. Clare says:

[Ack - 'whose mind' not 'who's mind' - sorry grammar pedants, fingers working faster than brain]

  19. ferijen says:

No, Clare, you’re not the only one with thoughts unworthy of a Christian blog!

Congratulations Dave. Incidentally, I saw the “Hereford” cartoon last week in the display…

  20. Farli says:

    Woohooooo! Well done.

  21. Freedom Bound says:

    Congrats mister!

“Most Successful Evangelistic Blog or Site”

How do they messure success exactly? Do the angels rejoicing in heaven tell them who’s one this one????

  22. Freedom Bound says:

oops = another case of quick fingers and slow brain!

    “messure”???
    “one”???

    D’oh!

  23. Chas says:

Well done indeed!!!!! And, just for the record, I know what a wireless rabbit is …

  24. rain says:

    C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S !!!!!!

    that’s wonderful news – whoooo-hoo!
(i always thought you were creative…)
    :D

  25. Richard says:

Surely if you have a wireless rabbit, ‘plugging it in’ is an unnecessary activity…

  26. David says:

Very many congratulations, Dave – a very well deserved award.

I must admit that most of the other so-called blog awards don’t seem to have been for blogs at all but I guess it’s the first year so we shouldn’t be too critical! :-)

Anyway, congrats. Is there going to be some kind of weird overlaying banner on your site now trumpeting your success? :-)

  27. Lisa says:

Hearty congratulations! You’ve earned this one.

Like several above, I thought all rabbits were wireless.

  28. Auntie Doris says:

ooooo well done. Do you feel famous yet? ;)

  29. Philip of Samaria says:

    well done Dave

  30. Chris says:

Well done Dave. I can think of no other Christian cartoonist from Essex with wild hair who deserves this award more.

  31. chris clark says:

    Well done Dave :-)

On the rabbit theme before I had my own business I ordered a mouse from a local store. A friend who is not computer literate took the call from Tandy and wrote making the best sense she could of the call and wrote the following….”the shop says your robot rabbit is in stock”

    Perhaps she was a prophet

  32. Jaded for Jesus says:

WE-HEY! CONGRATS DAVE! Richly deserved! And what a favour you’ve done us all – nothing beats a bit of vicarious triumph on a Monday morning. Is there no end to your altruism?

  33. Rick says:

Just been to visit the winner of the ‘Best Church Website’ award and I had to smile to myself at their ‘tagline’. For those who haven’t been there yet the website is entitled: “Kings Church – Making Jesus Famous” – because, let’s face it, until they came along no-one had ever heard of him…….

  34. Karin says:

Yes, Well done Dave and congratulations!

  35. Jack the Lass says:

Well done Dave, can I have your autograph?

  36. joe says:

Nicely done Dave. Shame about the tie.

And I’m sorry to see nobody took up my suggestion from the post you linked to above ;)

As I said mate, you deserve all the success going. All power to your trousers and other parts of your clothing (excluding the tie).

  37. Canadian says:

    Congratulations!

  38. Simon says:

    Wireless Rabbit?

I got all confused when I heard an item on the radio this morning where they started talking about cows with Bluetongue, thinking it was something like Bluetooth, but with more drool.

    Many congrats.

  39. Andy says:

    Nice one dave.
But as Claire said – we need more information on the wireless rabbit

  40. Arti says:

Many many congratulations Dave! Coo – to think I (slightly) know someone who is sort of famous!

  41. David Keen says:

Congratulations Dave – does being an award-winning blogger mean that you’re having your 15Mb of fame?

  42. Gavin White says:

Well Done Dave on your award – great to hear about your blog at the awards on Friday Night!

    God Bless,

    Gavin White

  43. Dave says:

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

At the time of writing I haven’t got the wireless rabbit to work, probably owing to incompetence. I will try again shortly and tell you more about it when I have. Yes, I am aware that needing to plug in a wireless rabbit might seem odd.

  44. Emily says:

Hey Dave, congratulations on winning! I can see why your blog won – it’s great. What a great evening it was on Friday. I still can’t believe I won! Very surreal. Keep up the good work! Blessings to you,
    Emily

  45. Chris says:

Adding mine to the congratulations, Dave! Richly deserved!

A wireless rabbit is probably an upgrade on the original – I hope it’s compatible with any other forms of rabbit you may be running on your system ;-)

  46. Chris says:

… though having just seen your comment above, possibly not?

  47. Jen says:

Congratulations!!! I feel a bit silly cos I scan read this post a day or so ago, and didn’t see the ‘um…. me’ bit. Oops!

  48. ee says:

Well done, you thoroughly deserve it. I must also congratulate Premier, who would win the ‘Most Bizarre Award Prize’ for the wireless rabbit, if at some point there is an awards event for awards events.
