The numbers game

not about the numbers

In my days as a youth worker I would sometimes hear youth worker and ministers at meetings talk about how they were not ‘playing the numbers game’ or that ‘it is not about bums on seats’. The thinking behind such comments was that there are more important things than how many people come to your services / youth club / events.

I tended to think that if nobody came along to the things you were running it probably was because they were rubbish or clashed with something good on TV. But then I am no longer a youth worker, from which you could deduce that some of my philosophies were flawed.

The image depicts a non-conformist minister as you can see. I thought it was about time I drew a non-Anglican picture. Just in case anyone is thinking that I am attempting to perpetuate a stereotype I’d like to point out that there are a few middle of the road Anglican churches that are nearly empty on a Sunday morning. It is not only the non-conformist Evangelical and Charismatic churches that struggle for numbers.

I will add this to the downloadable section if there is a small to medium demand for me to do so. I’m afraid the picture has poor perspective as I did some errors whilst drawing.

errors? what errors? looks perfect to me…

by the way, i realized i don’t know how you upload your images.
do you draw your cartoons on old fashioned paper then scan it into a computer?
or by amazing odds are you capable of utilizing the mouse to draw in some sort of software program? either way, you’re very very good…(no, i don’t want anything – am not asking for a kidney or money – although, at some point i might like a personalized cartoon or a freshly baked loaf of bread)

Ok, this comment is lengthy – have a good day tomorrow!

Thanks Rain. I’m still here – insomnia.

Yes, I draw on paper, then scan. I then edit on the computer using the mouse. I edit for anywhere between 30 seconds and several hours depending on who the drawing is for, how complex the drawing is and and how many mistakes and blemishes there are in it. I only spent about ten minutes tidying this one up.

The problem with this picture is the perspective. In short the pews should not be quite as parallel given the way I have drawn some of the other bits. But yes, it isn’t too bad.

ah, thanks for claification – pefect example of the artist being his own worst critic :)

note: whenever i do home repairs, i see every single flaw… or when i cook…make something…repairs… etc etc

and i hope the sleep monster hits you soon. sleep deeply.

….it’s not about the perspective…..! Love your work! Thanks for making my days begin with a smile. Liz.

I assumed the lack of perspective was allegorical :-)

  6. Kate P says:

In our church the pews aren’t alway parallel to begin with. In that case, a trick of perspective might make them look like the ones in your pciture. You were drawing a real church, not a perfect one!

On the subject of numbers, why does my computer tell me that the last comment on all your recent posts was 37 years 8 months ago? Spooky!

I’m of small to medium height, and I demand that it be downloadable.
