I have a tip for those who must leave their tomatoes and other potted plants on balconies while they travel around England or other pieces of land.

What you do is you take a deep pie tin or casserole pan and put water in it. Then you put your potted plants in it. They will drink up the water as they need it.

Veg thoughts:

Sue - I have found that here we have to raise veg up above the ground to avoid the slugs. There is no other way that works and I have tried them all. I use two 'mini greenhouses' - posh name for outdoor shelves. Even without the plastic coverings they do a very useful job.

Tim: I fear that your tomatoes may die. However, I have found that tomatoes continue to ripen even on utterly dead plants. I don't know whether this is a miracle.

Glad you hear you are Greenbelting, and that your veg did not get eaten by snails. (which is what happened when I tried growing some. I suppose I could have tried eating the big fat snails instead but they didn't look very edible).

I'd have a category 'Christian book which has content you remember for more than a week'. Adrian Plass famously described Christian books as being like chinese takeaways - enjoyable at the time, but almost instantly forgettable.

I've given up reading anything described as a 'christian' book.

My blog was rated G, based, according to the site, on one occurence of the word 'missionary'. I might try posting the word 'position' and see if I get an x rating.

Vegetables...highly commendable...All I have are some beans which are still 5" tall ..partly due to the garderner using the sodium chlorare watering can on them...she didn't know...I should have told her...I know.

Prayer one...concerned that the pastors are having fun whilst praying....I sure Christianity shouldn't be fun ;-)

Book categories...

Thankyou for the inspiring photo of vegetables grow in small plastic pots in Essex.

It is both an encouragement, and a worry, to see this - as we have just left our tomatoes growing in small plastic pots on a balcony in Leicester, as we head on the annual visit-all-the-family-en-route-to-greenbelt -as-we-don't-have-a-car-and-the-train-can-be-very -expensive-otherwise trip - without managing to find anyone who can water said tomatoes whilst we are aware.

This leaves is in a very awkward situation of wishing for driving rain for Leicester (as drizzle doesn't really manage to get anything on the balcony wet) and wonderful sunshine for Cheltenham.

Ah well, at least the Mangetout and salad which have already cropped were a success...
