Christian Blog Awards

Premier Media are organising a blog awards evening in September, to be called the Christian Blog Awards. If you would like to be awarded for your blogging endeavours you need to send an e-mail to the organisers and then be able to turn up to a black tie event in London. You also need to be the UK I’m afraid. The rules are here.

These are the categories:

Unfortunately I do not really fit any of these categories, so I do not think I can enter. In fact the categories seem a bit narrow to me and probably rule out about 70% of the Christian blogs I read, which seems a shame. In my case I really need a category entitled ‘Best miscellaneous and in-depth analysis blog (with drawings)’. I will write to them and suggest such a thing. [Update: see below for new categories added after this was posted]

Also there does not seem to be a closing date. I will write and ask them about that too.

Thanks to Inspire Magazine for the information about this.

Update: I’ve received the following e-mail about the categories:

Dear Dave,

Thanks for getting in touch, and thanks for posting about the awards on your site. With the weblog awards being in their first year things are evolving as entries come in.

Some award categories have been mentioned on the site, but we were purposefully waiting for queries such as yours to come in as a method of creating new award categories. Many people have submitted their sites and said ‘i don’t know which category i fit in but would like to enter’, so if you do that yourself, you should see a few more categories being posted on our site in the next few days.

Looking at your site, whether you consider it to be or not, we think that your site is evangelistic in that it’s reaching people in a clever way… anyway, new categories will appear soon, fear not!

Thanks again for your interest.
God bless

Update 2: there are now some new categories:

We’re pleased to announce two new categories for the Blog Awards this year. They are Best Christian Social Action website or blog and after some wise prompting from a few entrants who weren’t sure which category to enter, Best Creative Christian Blog.

If you are interested in entering but you’re still not sure which of the ten categories to list your blog under, drop us a mail and we’ll do our best to recommend one!

I’m with you, Dave, the categories seem very narrow. I don’t see anything I could enter under and as I check down my list of blogs I read regularly that are based in the UK and Christian and absolutely outstanding, I can’t see any that would qualify in their categories.

I’d also like to know more about how they are going to judge. For example, with best church website, I’d say a site that has a really good back-end system that enables non-techie people in the church to exercise gifts in photography, journalism and writing, administration etc would win hands down for me over a site that ‘looks nice’.

Will be interesting to watch at least since we don’t seem to be able to enter. :-/

  2. tortoise says:

How are they going to establish the ‘most successful evangelistic blog? Most hits? Most converts? Fewest backsliders? Tastiest quiches?

  3. Ellen says:

what about best ‘being a Christian and just getting on with it’ blog? I could enter that one…

  4. Sarah B says:

Unless they add the category of: “Intermittently Interesting blog” I don’t think I qualify!

I think Youthblog might be in with a chance for the youthblog award so maybe there should be a Deep Thought award and then I might be in with a chance!

  5. joe says:

Why does anyone want a prize for blogging? I don’t get it.

It is like giving someone a prize for writing a shopping list.

Clearly, Dave deserves success because he is a classy cartoonist. Others might deserve prizes because of something else they do. But for blogging? I don’t think so.

And obviously there is some netiquette which has not yet been worked out properly yet: whilst it might be acceptable to be nominated for a blog award, should you really be a) able to nominate yourself and b) able to advertise the existance of said awards on your own blog?

  6. ChristianBlogAwards says:

    Hey Joe,

This is the first year we’ve tried out the Christian Blog Awards – for us it’s about having an evening of celebration and recognition for Christians who dedicate regular amounts of time posting about Christ and Christianity on the net.

Whether you get tens or tens of thousands of hits, the chances are if you’re posting regularly you’re going to be reaching people and making them laugh or think. Because sometimes blogging can feel like shouting into a dark room that’s probably empty, we thought it was time we told Christian bloggers what they do does make a difference and that it’s worth celebrating with a nice meal and a few trophies and prizes.

As for the netiquette of entering your own blog, I think it’s better to enter your own site (or you church’s) into the awards than sit by the sidelines dropping hints for one of your readers to do it. Of course, I would say that – I want people to enter.

On a personal note, I think the Freedom Clothing Project rocks.

Phew – I’m going to end this post before my fingers fall off from all this typing.

  7. BD says:

I’m still laughing over your Facebook cartoon…

I didn’t think I’d see the day when a Christian company would hold UK blog awards.:^)

  8. Phil G says:

How about Most Holy Blog – I might get a look in purely by blog name alone…not much else mind you!

  9. David Keen says:

I think (correct me if I’m wrong) Joe’s point about nominating yourself is more to do with whether self-promotion is a good thing. I wouldn’t have the confidence/arrogance (it all depends what you call it!) to nominate my own blog but there are several blogs by other people I’d gladly nominate.

There may be a lot of Christian bloggers who are put off entering because they feel uncomfortable about nominating themselves. If there was a category of Most Humble Blogger, then with the competition criteria there would be zero nominees.

  10. Dave says:

    Joe,

I understand where you’re coming from I think, and have been thinking about your points over the course of the day.

First of all, I don’t see that having awards for blogging is a bad thing. Some people do put a lot of energy and effort into their blogs for the benefit of their readers and I don’t think it is a bad thing for this to be recognised. I don’t see why someone shouldn’t deserve success on the merits of a blog that others enjoy.

About the self promotion aspect. I think that promoting yourself and your blog is OK if it is done in a measured way. I have occasionally, for instance, contacted a famous international blogger when I’ve done a blog post that I think is one of my better ones. I don’t mind people doing the same to me – sending me an e-mail if they’ve posted something they think is good, as long as they don’t do it all the time and they accept that I might choose to ignore it if it’s been a long day.

Similarly I don’t think it’s wrong to nominate yourself for an award – perhaps if you see it as ‘entering a competition’ it sounds better. By putting your entry in your not saying that you think yours is the best blog, but merely that you’d like to be considered.

On the other hand I have sometimes seen people getting a bit over competitive about blog awards. I ignore lots of them because I don’t think they are worth the piece of internet they are printed on.

I think it is good that Premier are putting these awards on and hopefully it will give hardworking bloggers a bit more recognition within Christian goings-on.

  11. Karin says:

Well, if Jonathan Bartley is one of the judges it can’t be all bad.

  12. Michelle says:

Don’t think there’s a category for me either. What’s the nearest to, “blog by a Christian who talks about cups of tea and rambles a bit”?

  13. Chris Clark says:

I trust the award ceremony will be DJs only, with liberal amounts of alcohol and the chance for people to sponsor tables. Will there be a celebrity cracking jokes as the awards are given out and people thinking winning an award is more important than doing a good job?

Sorry I was getting confused with the computer industry.

  14. Richard says:

Oooh! Maybe they’ll add a ‘least-read’ category! I might stand a chance! (Note cunning but ultimately ineffective self-advertising technique!)

  15. joe says:

As you know, my reward is in heaven *shines holy halo*

  16. jody says:

c’mon dave, you have to enter for most creative blog, g’on g’on g’on g’on g’on.

  17. ee says:

    yeah. g’on g’on g’on. enter. you’ll win (probably).

There’s a fine line between self-promotion and not hiding your light under the bushel.

As for tortoise’s comment about how they judge the most successful evangelistic blog, I repeat what I said on Richard’s blog on the same subject:

‘And in the award for Most Successful Evanelistic Blog, we are proud to announce that http://www.virtualaltarcall.com has beaten http://www.conversionfodder.com by fifty sinners prayers to twenty. http://www.repentye!.com has been highly commended for getting recommitments from twenty liberal backsliders.’

  18. Karin says:

Oh no! ee, liberal backsliders will never repent of backsliding liberally!!

    Altogether now,
‘I’m a liberal backslider and it sure is a lot of fun!’ :-D

  19. joe says:

I’ve changed my mind. I’d like to enter the ‘Best Christian Idea for a New Christian Category on the Christian Blog Awards As Posted As a Comment on Someone Else’s Blog’ Category.

And then I’ll change my name by deed poll to Christian Award.

Actually better still, I’m going to change my name to Jesus and insist all the winners are chosen by a Junior Church class. If you can’t win, cheat.

  20. Jaded for Jesus says:

Surely all Christian blogs must qualify as being evangelistic to some degree? If not, I’ve missed a fundamental point about witness.

On self-promotion, blogging is effectively publishing, and the act of publishing would seem to imply a hope of being read. To be read, you do have to do a bit of publicity-wangling occasionally. Or wait for a very long time in a state of modest hope. Am I missing something again? It’s been a long day…

Anyway, I think you’d qualify for an evangelistic award, Dave. Otherwise, how about running the Cartoon Church Awards?

  21. Mark Berry says:

So you have to nominate your own blog??? something *does* seems wrong with that to me OK if others are able to nominate your blog, but not the other way round… at least they should change the categories so they do not include the words “best” or “worst” to say “the blog, out of those whose owners either have an over-inflated ego, a need for affirmation, or a who simply fancied having a go, that got the most votes on the day”! or we could just have a google rating contest???

By their nature Blogs have a plurality of themes/categories anyway, and the “best” blog changes on a daily (if not more frequent) basis, it would make more sense to have a “post” competition than a “blog” competition, i.e. “best evengelistic post” or “most creative post”, so it all seems a bit out of context and somewhat silly to me.
