Caris magazine

grace magazineCaris is a new magazine for girls aged 11-16. It is published by the Church Times in conjunction with a number of different youth organisations.

Free sample issues are being given away – there is a shortened sample copy available to download on the site or you can order a free copy. The launch issue, due out in August will be the full 48 pages and will also be free if I understand things correctly. If you are a girl aged 11-16 or a youth leader or you know young people who might enjoy it why not sign up to get some free copies.

Yesterday the Independent published an article about it: No snogging, no celebrity gossip: church launches magazine for teenage girls. I read in that article that the Archbishop of Canterbury has given some funding to it, so he must think it is a good idea. As a retired youthworker I also think it is a good idea, and I hope it does well.

Edit: The magazine was originally to have been called ‘Grace’, but the name was changed pre-launch for legal reasons.

No snogging? Even the Church Times has snogging in it sometimes.

    kissing is bad now too?

  3. Sarah B says:

Sounds good and looks pretty good to. Is that no snogging in THIS issue….?? ;oP

Has the Arch Bishop given his own money to fund a magazine for teenage girls?

I recall being schooled by Joyce Huggett in sex education…those were the days. I am sure Joyce would approve of Grace. Certianly if there is no snogging. snogging is really only for people who are married and have brushed their teeth (I added the teeth bit).

By the way it looks quite appealing (the magazine that is). My 8year old wants a copy…do you think there is anything too racy in it for an 8year old?

Hard to say without having seen a copy! Most girls want to read magazines aimed at the age group above them, and I doubt this will change with a Christian-based magazine.
The big challenge with this kind of title is do you
1 Make it cool enough to attract the readership you want
2 Make it tick all the boxes parents would like to see ticked
Choosing 1 may make it too edgy for parental approval (and it may be parents buying it for their daughters). Choosing 2 may make it too safe and a total turn-off for the teen audience (who wants a mag your mum thinks you should read?!)
That said, there’s a need out there and I hope they do well with it.

When I first saw news about this it was around the 1st April and I seriously thought it was a joke news story! As a joke publication I thought it was great.

Saw this advertised on the back of the Church Times’ guide to Greenbelt last year. My friends and I decided we found it scary, but that said, it might have been just the thing when I was a teenager. But then I was a rather boring teenager :) Still, I hate girls’ magazines and hopefully this one will be a great improvement on the norm!

This is what you now find on their web site

Hi! Because of legal problems, we have had to change our name to Caris.

You would have thought that 5 minutes Google research would have revealed that there are at least three other magazine called Grace, two of them in the UK.

i’m a 14 yr old girl who was given this mag by my youth worker!
its good as it includes helpful tips, quizzes and interviews. it also has a lot of info about charities, illnesses and a varity of problem across the world.
i dont understand why everyone is so outraged that there includes no snogging. coz really teenage girls have more on their minds than kissing and boys.
we do have real problems too even if they seem pointless.
its a good idea to have a christian mag for teenagers as usually you dont often find ones that include things that girl want to read about. and its good that an older generation (arch bishop) have helped let this happen.

if you were all teenage girls now you would probably like this magazine.
