No Smoking signs for churches

no incenseThe ‘public places in England’ smoking ban comes into effect on Sunday. As far as I can understand churches are required to put up signs, perhaps on a noticeboard for instance. The official guidance is here.

There have been various news reports over the last month or two about whether the signs should apply to churches. A debate in the House of Commons on the subject is here, and then there are news reports on the BBC, Christian Today and a comment piece by Matthew Parris from the Times. Some people have even gone as far as to say that the smoking ban threatens churches with closure, but I think that is a bit of an exaggeration, and perhaps even an over-exaggeration.

No smoking resources for churches are available on a few diocesan websites (Exeter and Hereford for instance) and of course you can use the official signs. I thought though that it would be a good idea to provide some signs of my own, so here they are. They are free to download, print off, or whatever. You don’t need to buy a licence to use them, though you do for most of my other stuff.

Please note that these signs might not be legal – in fact the first one is probably the only one which might be. I accept no responsibility for any trouble you may get into as a result of using these signs. If you get into a bit of a pickle it is your own doing, so don’t say I didn’t tell you so.

    Dave, you are a hero.

[...] *ahem*. Apologies for that – I can’t resist dropping in the odd Spaced quote now and then. Anyway, the anti-smoking bill is coming into effect on Sunday. This includes Churches. Dave Walker has posted up some no smoking signs for Churches. The last one is definitely my favourite, but as he doesn’t want people hotlinking you will have to go to the page and look at it yourself! [...]

They’re wonderful! Absolutely wonderful! Since I’m working so hard to quit, I’m downloading several to hang up in my studio.

Back in the antedeluvian era when I was young, there was quite a movement towards having folk masses with lots of guitar and tambourine players, liturgical dancers, fancy vestments, whatever you could think of. There was a great cartoon posted in our church depicting one of these explosive extravaganzas. Over in the corner, near the altar rail, two little middle-aged ladies were puffing away on their ciggies. The priest, in flower-power vestments, was approaching them saying, “I’m sorry, ladies. That’s still one of our little no-no’s here…”

  4. Paul says:

Dave, just what I needed – the “incense is fine” version is now duly pinned up in the church porch.

    Blessings.

    Paul

  5. Mary says:

Our vicar has modified our no smoking sign so that next to it is a picture of a thurible with a tick, saying “Incense Exempt”. I thought it was pretty amusing

Love the signs! Wales has had the ban in place since April and my minister (Richard Hall) blogged about breaking the law by not putting up a non-smoking sign the day that the law came into place. He did put it up a few days later, I think he just forgot.

  7. Spike says:

Great points raised there Dave. C’mon, lets face it? Who smokes in church anyway? Anyone who is likely to spark up a fag in a church probably wouldn’t pay any attention to a No Smoking sign anyway.

  8. ~c. says:

As non-UKian, I find this ever so amusing.

  9. Miss Dagurreotype says:

I love the no incense sign. I get awful headaches when I’m stuck breathing overpowered incense made from non-natural stuff. I even once got a migraine from the overdone incense at a healing service!

  10. yay says:

So what if you were to get a pipe and fill it with incense? Would that be ok?

  11. joe says:

Just stand near the thurible and breath normally, Yay.

  12. Chris Clark says:

I understand that incense smoke is even more carcinogenic than cigarette smoke. I like a bit of ritual but when the original point of the ritual has gone and you find that it is actually harmful I am puzzled as to why we carry on …

    Great cartoons Dave…you’re a star

  13. Gregory Porilo says:

I love the signs – great work! Personally I don’t understand all the fuss concerning churches being against having “no-smoking” signs because they say that “nobody smokes in church anyway”. That’s just rubbish. We have had no-smoking signs in our church for as long as I can remember and still people ignore them. I’ve been to several churches where I have seen people smoking, most often at weddings and funerals which tend to attract people who are not accustomed to church “etiquette” and reverence. I once saw a man drop his cigarette butt into the holy water stoup as he was leaving!!!

  14. Ellen says:

thanks for these. as ever you bring a sense of insanity to the situation. xxx

  15. John Cooper says:

Most amusing signs – suspect you no smoking but incense is fine one will go far. I can’t understand what all the fuss is about, Scotland got on with this ban ages ago – even before Wales – and I don’t remember any such outcry then.

Maybe the scots clergy just aren’t as media exciteable?

    Regards
    John

Ship of Fools have an absolutely hysterical service for the blessing of No Smoking signs:

I just stumbled across this blog, and found these little signs, oh how they made me laugh! I do agree that putting up signs evrywhere that’s public is a bit ridiculous though, including the church. I printed out the ‘it is against the law to break the law’ one, I think that’s the best one, so funny.

I had to laminate tons of these signs at work, then stick them up everywhere. No-one ever smoked in work anyway, it’s just not done. Sigh. My housemate has a laminator… oh… just think of the wonders of these signs laminated EVERYWHERE! Yeahhh
