Church Weekend Away

At the weekend we went to a Church Weekend Away. This is a time when a church goes away, usually for a weekend. The aim is to become a more enthusiastic Christian. We went to Ashburnham. I love Ashburnham. It is a sort of a Mecca for Evangelicals, Pentecostals, and those on Church Weekends Away. For Evangelicals it is probably one of the holiest sites in East Sussex.

return this leaf

These are some leaves I wrote on and left on a bench for the Pentecostals to discover. I enjoy leaving messages for Pentecostals. You should try it.

In the end I went back to the bench and retrieved the leaves as (1) I decided that you might enjoy them more than the Pentecostals, and (2) It occurred to me that one of the Pentecostals might have their Church Weekend Away ruined by finding the leaves and not knowing what to make of them. The last thing I want to do is ruin someone else’s Church Weekend Away.

Update: I wonder whether I could find a publisher for a book of leaves with uplifting messages on them. The idea would be that you could remove the leaves and give them to friends as the need or opportunity arose.

It would be called ‘Take a leaf out of my book’.

You are a scream, Dave! :D

  3. Arti says:

Sounds like a great idea Dave - you should go for it!

  4. Aaron says:

You have the quirkiest mind I’ve ever come across this side of sanity. God bless you!

  5. Steve says:

    Hi dave,

This is the funniest idea i’ve seen in mant weeks - thanks for making me smile, and laugh out loud - I love the leaves.

  6. Anne says:

I thought you might be planning on turning over a new leaf . . .

  7. Ellen says:

how do you know when the Pentecostals get your messages?

I think this was my favorite blog post of the day. Dave Walker’s sense of humor just cracks me up sometime. I think he should have left the leaves for the pentecostals, but then again I’m glad he was able to share them with us, as they gave me quite a chuckle. …

I love the leaves. I wish you could come on our weekends away. Your sense of fun is superb. Keep up the great work :=)

Have not been to Ashbunham in twenty years! I wonder if it has changed at all.

Do they still do the chicken casserole on the Saturday evening, followed by the runny trifle thing?

I seem to recall coming back from every Ashburnham weekend with a chest infection: something to do with the damp in the dorms.

And then there’s the out of tune piano in the Library…

‘this side of sanity’ - hmmm :-)

I love the idea that Dave does something sweet and innocent and harmless, then feels guilt and has to go back and tidy it away.

    Dave

Would you mind me asking whether it’s a good place for children? only I’m taking responsibility for organising Sunday School from September (gulp), and I’d like to do a ‘retreat’ during the year ahead - with the Sunday School. Somewhere not too far from London. Adn I don’t know where to start to look….

  14. Russ says:

Why stop at leaves, Dave? It’s a concept that could be extended to fallen branches, litter and perhaps even small rodents. We used to paint messages on my tortoise’s shell, although I expect that is probably now illegal and the RSPCT would be after us.

By the way, just came back from the Churches’ Media Council Conference at Swanwick, and your cartoons were mentioned approvingly in a workshop on comedy in the religious media. Thought you’d like to know.
I didn’t write on any leaves but I was given a small yellow rubber duck and two light up lollipops. Which was nice.

  15. Dave says:

    Thanks all.

Ruth - you’d need to ask I think. It might depend on what sort of thing you wanted to do. It does tend to get quite booked up with church weekends etc, but worth asking.

If you wanted something more basic, say a church hall with attached kitchen, I do know a place. Near London, outside space, 1 minute walk to the Thames.

  16. Judah says:

    Dave, you’re a hoot!
This certainly has to be the best Blog of the Week post.

  17. ruth says:

Dave - thank you for the advice - much appreciated.
