Religion on Radio 1

bishops recording a single

In recent days there have been complaints from certain circles that there is not enough religion on BBC Radio 1. This has mainly been from Bishops who, one assumes, have the radio on whilst on the way to do confirmations and ordinations the like.

The BBC Editors weblog has replied to Arun (a Cartoon Blog reader and occasional commenter) who contacted them on the subject. Their reply was that the Bishop’s Easter sermons were not interesting enough (or did not ‘cut the mustard’ to use the exact phrase) to make the news because there was some news happening at the same time.

Perhaps the Bishops need to come up with a new approach. Hence the cartoon.

In unrelated (but related) news, the BBC is to end the Heaven and Earth show. I have a friend that works on the show who I hope is being employed by the programmes that will replace it.

[This cartoon can be posted on your blog if you post a link back here. Thank you!]

now in all honesty, is there actually anyone who listens to Radio1??? When you consider how much better Radios2,3,4&5 are in comparison, just let them be…

    Aheeeeeeeeeem!
and yes, thats a long ahem , with a cough cough cough, not an amen …

  3. Dave K says:

Bishops…[rolls eyes skywards]…they can’t expect to get on Radio 1 if they don’t have a demo and haven’t spent (at least) the last 5 years playing the live circuit and building up a grassroots following. Do they even have a MySpace page or give out free t-shirts, bumper stickers and skimpy knickers at their gigs? Do they even play live or do they just mime?…[rolls eyes skywards]…

    Dave – :)

By the way, please excuse my artistic impression of a mixing desk sort of a thing. I’m sure there are some that look a bit like that, somewhere…

  5. Chris Clark says:

I was really encouraged to see that you had found 3 Bishops who agree sufficiently on the artistic direction of the group…they must have put thier theological differences to one side…

How do you cut mustard? If we knew how we could run a training course at Church Houise and next year the airwaves will be full of Bishops..

Inspired by this cartoon (and a certain recent controversy)I wrote and recorded a song which you can find at

Thanks, Dave, for helping to give us all a sense of perspective.

Classic FM play loads of christian music. Lots of it is in latin and it all tends to be a couple of hundred years old, but you also get some great stuff like Karl Jenkins’ “The Armed Man“, which , for my money, is better than hip-hopping bishops.

  8. Philip of Samaria says:

Jesus said ‘upon this rock’ so had to be right tobe on R1..
