Undelivered e-mail

Today I learned that an important work-related e-mail had not reached its recipient. Fortunately the person got in touch with me, but I suspect often they don’t and we all just assume that other people did not get around to replying and are a bit slack or rude or busy or hate us. Those of us who rely on the internet for business purposes lose money as a result.

According to a shocking statistic that I have just made up e-mail will be entirely useless in 5 to 7 years time as the systems will be so overrun with spam to as to be unworkable. It will all grind to a halt and there will be a small cloud of smoke, a medium-sized ‘pop!’ and that will be it.

In the meantime if you have not received a reply to an e-mail that you have sent me it is definitely because it has got lost in the internet. Unless you are one of the 113 people to whom I have not replied of course.

    Some of those messages floating about in cyberspace are from me to one of our churchwardens, whose provider filters out messages containing words like funeral and coffin, making life a bit difficult when you’re trying to organise a service. The same provider also bounced back a message to another church member which contained the word “adult”. (as in number of adults attending a service)

    Dave, how timely. Just about 2 hours ago, I found myself in yet another conversation with one particular inividual from whom I had ordered motivational posters for my corporate client. He had previously told me, “Oh, I emailed you those proofs to you.” When I told him that I did not receive the email, he said something along the lines of “Well, I can’t imagine why not, I sent it.”

    Getting into a round of “I sent it” and “I didn’t receive it” is resolved nicely at times, and sometimes it’s messy. I finally received an email from the afore-mentioned gentleman about an hour ago, and it did include the needed proofs, and it did include an unnecessary paragraph again outlining that he had sent it previously, had sent it to THAT particular email address, had done this and that and etc. and etc.

    I would love to recover the lost hours we spend discussing effects of ineffective technology. Just to let you know what a relevant topic you chose to explore! Keep it up!

    That’s the other thing I forgot to mention I’m having trouble with! Email! Some of them get through, but some of them get lost in cyberspace, until they find their way home, taking anything up to a week to arrive!

    Sending seems fine, its receiving that’s the problem, although funnily enough all the ones I send to myself seem to arrive OK…

    DH received 2 “reply all” emails today. Trouble is, he still hasn’t received the original (which was sent at 3:40pm today…
