Things I have seen from the train

I enjoy looking out of the window whilst on the train and taking pictures of things that seem interesting to me. I can sit there for 5 hours or more with my camera poised, whilst my wife and all the other passengers occupy themselves with reading or puzzles or whatever they like to do.

The only problem is that my camera takes a photo about 2 seconds after you press the button, so I have a fine collection of things seen from the train 2 seconds after we passed something interesting.

Just occasionally it works quite well though, as in the case of these terraced houses seen near Durham on Saturday.

houses seeen from train

For every one of these I have 20 pictures with subjects such as ‘field obscured by telegraph pole’, ‘house with blurred railway trackside equipment’ or ‘trees accidentally photographed at speed’.

Anyway, we are back from being away and in Scotland. We had a lovely time and got to see lots of interesting things and people, mainly in Edinburgh, but also for one day in Glasgow where we went to see Jack the Lass and the Glasgow School of Art.

So, now I am back and will be doing drawings once I find my desk. I also have some extra duties to attend to, about which more later.

Questions for study groups
1) What have you seen out of the window on the train?
2) How does this tie in with all the verses in the Bible?

    1) Lots of things, including sheep.
    2) Hmmm sheep, I’m sure there is something about that somewhere.

  2. Chris Clark says:

I’m not sure if I can do all the verses in the bible but Is 6 comes to mind…his train filled the temple…if you were in Bristol that could pesumably be Temple Meads ;-)

    Welocome back Dave..we’ve missed you.

  3. Chris says:

Welcome back, Dave. Trust you are suitably refreshed. Edinburgh is a wonderful city!

“In my Father’s room there are many houses”??!

  4. Dave says:

Farli – yes, I saw some sheep.

Chris – I was always under the impression that Temple Meads was quite a big station and therefore difficult to fill. If I remember correctly it has a big iron roof from the olden times meaning that there is a lot of volume to fill.

I am in favour of big iron rooves from the olden times. I saw several at the weekend and remarked accordingly.

The other Chris – thank you!

I always smile when we go through Finsbury Park and see a hughe neon sign that reads ‘Rowan’s Bowling Alley.’

I like to think the Archbishop likes bowling. I think he should have a hobby.

  6. Ann says:

Train? Train? we have not had a passenger train go through Wyoming for years. So sad. Our train station now houses the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center. Lander used to have the motto – “Where the Rails End and the Trails Begin.”

  7. Ann says:

OBTW – here is a view of our town from the web cam – the train station used to be across from the Lander Mill (where we still by horse food). The reason the street is so wide is when they were laid out one had to be able to turn a team of oxen around in the street.

  8. Ann says:

That is “buy” as in purchase. Typing in tongues.

  9. Bimble says:

Somewhere in New York State I saw a Santa, in a rowing-boat, at the top of a telegraph pole….

How to fit that into a Bible verse……

  10. Jack the Lass says:

You make me sound like a Glasgow tourist attraction! Was good to see you both, will put photos on my blog at some point.

  11. Ian says:

Welcome back: and great to hear of a good time had by all.

    (1) Graffiti
    (2) Daniel 5 and the “writing on the wall”

    [nice photo btw]

  12. revjoc says:

You got the houses of Durham – but did you look out the opposite window and see the greatest train image ever designed – with cathedral, castle and the city???

Oh btw – welcome back. Good to see you again.

  13. Paul says:

Isaiah 6.1, which proves God is a model train enthusiast: ‘his trains filled the temple.’

  14. joe says:

    Psalm 68: 18

“When you ascended on high, you led captives in your train” – must have been on the snowdon mountain railway.

    Song of Songs 3:7

“Look! It is Solomon’s carriage” I wonder if that was in the quiet zone.

    Jeremiah 51: 12

“Reinforce the … station” Pre-Beeching, clearly.

  15. mcewen says:

Makes feel quite homesick. Mind you, it also makes me feel quite old remembering all my train rides. On second thoughts, I’ve decided I won’t be homesick at all.
    Cheers

am sooooooo jealous of Jack the Lassie (surely, it’s Lassie – and yes I am scottish, not just being scottish-ist) for having you and wife’s company for the weekend.

am slightly worried how much I missed this blog and cartoons – felt slight withdrawal symptoms.

glad you had a good rest.

  17. Philip of Samaria says:

Not biblical but back in 1974 travelling back from Oxford the outrageous futility of the lives lived in houses just like yours hit me forcefully – either these lives including my own are completely absurd in their regimented endless repitition or God is big enough to love and give purpose to each and every one. For me the proof of the latter is Jesus death on the cross and my personal experience of his prescence.

Maybe not brought to life by these words but one of those memorable revelations in life…
