Cartooning Easter

Today I have been in a cartoon hell of my own making. Pressure of deadlines and not coming up with anything I’m happy with. It isn’t an unusual situation, but I don’t normally admit to it as it makes me look unprofessional. But today I am just going to admit my unprofessionalism and be done with it.

It is really quite difficult to draw Easter-related cartoons that are (a) unoffensive and (b) funny. Well, I find it so at least. If you take a wander around this site you will find that there is a distinct lack of Easter-related material.

Various folks have been giving the subject their best shot over at the Chewing Pencils site, but I don’t think the standard matches up to previous competitions there. I mean no disrespect to the cartoonists who did submit work – I just think it is a very difficult subject to cartoon well. I certainly didn’t have anything that was good enough to contribute.

Looking around the internet it seems that 95% of Easter cartoons stick to themes involving ‘easter bunnies’, which seems to me to miss the mark rather.

You may see some cartoons here with an Easter theme over the next week, but it is quite possible that you won’t.

I see the problem. I was trying to think of something witty for one guard outside the tomb to say to the other, like, ‘he was here a minute ago’, or ‘well, he won’t be going anywhere’ – but that’s not exactly witty. Hope you’ve hit on something.

“Mary was most put out to find it wasn’t the gardener and she couldn’t get free tickets to Chelsea!”

Yes, well, I won’t give up the day job!

Yes, I noticed the lack of Easter material, and also Palm Sunday. When I picked up my copy of Church Times this morning I was eargerly looking forward to a Palm Sunday cartoon and was disappointed to see that there wasn’t one. I have to admit, though, that the “Hymns” cartoon in today’s Church Times is excellent and has certainly brightened my day. Now, if the weather would do the same …….

Look forward to seeing something about Easter soon. It’s such a joyful time, the most important celebration of the year, and I’ve every confidence that you will come up with something appropriate, funny and in good taste. I wish I could think of some suggestions to offer. If I do, I will let you know.

    Kind regards,

    Gregory
