I hope the palm tree is not a metaphor for some parts of the C of E. Uprooting themselves and plonking themselves down somewhere else...perhaps with insufficient roots and sustenance.

Keep us posted Dave with updates on the palm tree. Surreytreecam ;-)

Hope you are really better soon...don't overdo it things can wait...your body needs rest...probably sounding like your mum now ...sorry!

My olive tree has survived a year in Surrey, although I do put its jacket on when we have a cold snap.

I also give the palm tree my best wishes and I hope Dave's recovery hasn't been set back by his participation - if it was Saturday it was still warm, but Sunday was decidedly nippy.

Has the palm tree been given an asbo, seeing as it was exhibiting threatening behaviour towards a mobile home. If the home was mobile, wouldn't it have been better to move that instead? I know you are not a perfectly well person right now, but I think there are certain details missing from your account.
(I could have made some rather pathetic joke about palming us off with a second hand tree but I won't).

Neil, you ask if the climate is right. It is March and it's hailing and sleeting on the Isle of Wight. The climate is about as right as a palm tree in the middle of Surrey!

Nefertiki and Neil,

Thank you for your observations and questions.

This was a second hand Palm tree - a 'hand me down' if you will. It had to be moved as it was threatening a mobile home.

I think the middle of the field was seen as a good a place to plant it as any. It had survived only a few miles away so the climate must be able to support them. We do not know whether it will survive but it is worth a try.

Why plant a palm tree in the middle of a field, is the obvious question, and is the climate right is the almost as obvious one.

I know we have plenty of palm trees here in Devon (I can see one from my window), but it is several degrees warmer on average down here...

Since I see nothing white either on the ground or falling from the sky (here we are still digging out and I haven't had my car on the road since Fri. with more snow on the way), I see no overwhelming reason why you should not be out planting palm trees. Still, it must be damp and chilly for a not-fully-recovered person. You must know a lot of very rich people as in Hawaii I saw many palm trees planted on what had been bare lava fields. It is VERY expensive to plant even one. I'm assuming it is a papier mache tree being planted for an ephemeral event? I hope the sun Over There comes out soon as it is bound to have a beneficial effect on your health.
