The British Empire & Commonwealth Museum in Bristol will be launching a major exhibition on 23rd April, entitled 'Breaking the Chains'. It's the centrepiece of the South West's 200th anniversary of abolition programme, and will run for two years. For further details, go to www.empiremuseum.co.uk . I gather that half a million Africans were transported to the Americas on Bristol-registered ships.

There's also going to be a walk of witness in Bath on Sunday 25th March. Why Bath? Well, it's where William Wilberforce met and married his wife(St Siwthin's, Walcot), Hannah More (another abolitionist) stage her first play (on an anti-slavery theme) at Bath's Theatre Royal, and the Wesleys (also heavily involved in abolition) have strong local links. On a much darker note, a son of one of Britain's wealthiest slave-owning families built a famous folly here: Beckford's Tower. And that's where the walk starts, 3pm. All welcome! Check out the Churches Together in Bath website. Sorry that this is a such a long comment...
