Alan Fletcher at the Design Museum

Yesterday we went to see the exhibition of Alan Fletcher’s work at the Design Museum in London (This is Alan Fletcher the designer, not Alan Fletcher the Dr Karl Kennedy of ‘Neighbours’).

I find Alan Fletcher’s work inspiring and have done for a number of years since being directed to ‘the Art of Looking Sideways‘.

This sort of exhibition reminds me that I enjoy making notes and doodles in notebooks.

The exhibition ends this weekend, so go now if you have the opportunity and like design-related things. It costs £7, but if you go on the train you can take advantage of the 2 for 1 offers they do on going to London attractions by train. If you can’t get there then Flickr has quite a few images posted by people who have been.

    Re: Flickr photos… do you take photos of art? I find myself not taking photos of art when I go to galleries etc, but appreciating the pieces whilst I’m there. If I want a particular print I’ll buy it in the shop. I found it odd in Paris recently – my wife and I visited Musee de l’Orangerie where Monet’s massive Water Lily paintings are hung. The rooms are enormous and well lit from natural light through the ceiling. We entered and sat in the middle to really appreciate the paintings. We’d move around the room and sit somewhere else. We were tired from walking around Paris, so sitting was good! Other visitors would wander into the room, snap away with their camera phones and then wander out. I couldn’t help but wonder what a waste of money that was.

    I guess certain art forms might be different and photos of those pieces (things that aren’t paintings or whatever) might be quite good.

    I’m blabbering a bit, but do others feel the same about photos of artwork?

    Chris,

    I tend to agree. I sometimes take a few pictures for the blog or to remind myself to look something up when I get home. In fact there are a lot of museums where they don’t like you taking pictures, but the Design Museum isn’t one. But yes, there were a lot of people snapping everything with camera phones, which does tend to indicate that they’ve missed the point.

    On the other hand seeing a few photos on Flickr did remind me of aspects of the exhibition. I suppose the ideal would be to buy a programme, but I don’t know if there was one.

    I am disappointed that Alan Fletcher of ‘Neighbours’ is not a well known designer. I have spent almost a decade following his work around the UK university scene – expecially his time spent in ‘Walkabout’ – and seek to follow his example of spending very little time actually doing anything related to medicine at all.

    Thank you for pointing out my mistake and saving me from a further decade of dilligent discipleship of the wrong person.

    I guess being reminded of the particular piece of art in a photo may bring back some of the emotion involved in viewing the piece and this is a good thing. But the key point being that you spent enough time viewing it in the first place to be moved by it, rather than just turning up and snapping away!

    Reporting on an exhibition too is obviously another good reason to snap away. :-)
