Stop ironing

stop ironing

This came about as a result of my thinking about cutting down on energy use.

Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and e-mails following on from my ‘responding to climate change‘ post. I’m still thinking about some of the issues but I think I will be going ahead with the environmental cartoons website. Someone suggested making it possible to send a cartoon to your MP, which sounds like an interesting idea and one that I’ve been thinking about.

I think it is worth taking in this advice on writetothem.com, that sending lots of identical or similar letters that have obviously been generated by some sort of orchestrated campaign is often counterproductive.

Any advice from people who know about this sort of thing would be appreciated.

  1. Jack the Lass says:

    But I like ironing :(

  2. Cleo says:

If you are passionate about an issue you should take the time to put it in your own words. One such letter has more impact than 100 form letters.

  3. Dave says:

Jack. Hmmm. I hadn’t counted upon finding people who liked ironing. I thought an anti-ironing cartoon would be a sure vote winner, but perhaps I was misguided.

Cleo. Indeed – that is the gist of the link I posted. The question is then what role a cartoonist / cartoon website could have in campaigning or helping others to campaign.

  4. Tired&Emotional says:

Shouldn’t we stop blogging? Isn’t this a waste of natural resources? Think of how much CO2 would be saved if we stopped using computers and went back to quills and recycled paper.

  5. ruth says:

Wayhay! Thanks for this – it’s made my day. Suddenly, I realise that I’ve been doing something to save the planet for donkeys years – I hate ironing and never do it. Two tips for the uninitiated:

    1) buy things that don’t crease too badly in the wash (obvioulsy), and
    2) relax. It may look creased when you put it on, but within half an hour, your own body heat will have worked out the worst of the creases!

  6. Jen says:

Dave you’re great! The perfect excuse to my mum as to why my clothes aren’t ironed! :)

  7. Paul Roberts says:

Dave, admit it … you’re being ironic.

  8. Chris Clark says:

I completely agree with Ruth but my wife says that the creases don’t drop out after a while so you need to add a third thing to do…don’t look in the mirror …

  9. Brian says:

Excellent. It is ridiculous that we should care whether clothes are creased or not . . . but we do. Worth thinking about why. I would not want to work for any employer who would not hire me if my shirt were wrinkled.

  10. Jo says:

I’m with Ruth on this one and pleased to say that I’m already ahead of the game on this one – I don’t iron. Haven’t done in years! It’s a waste of time – the creases are added back in as soon as you get on London Transport!

  11. Serena says:

Hurrah! I always knew ironing was evil.

  12. jody says:

I had a conversation with a woman at church in which we both confessed that we are ‘non-ironers’, I believe it is something constructed so that we never have spare time in which we are not feeling guilty that we are not ironing.

I said that the only thing I iron are my daughter’s school clothes and that is only because I fear judgement from other ‘ironing’ mothers – she said that she doesn’t even do that, ah, she is further along the path to enlightenment than I…

  13. ellen says:

thanks so much for the encouragement. I have never ironed. Ever, ever, ever. I, my husband and all assembled children go about life slightly wrinkly, but with happy hearts. much love. E. xxx

  14. Mary says:

My MIL even irons things like socks and tea towels! Ever seen a sock with a razor-sharp crease? :D

  15. Clare says:

Hmm, I’ve been known to iron knickers but even I would draw the line at socks.

Like Jack I actually rather like ironing although I don’t do it very often not actually possessing many clothes that actually need it.
