Bishop Mike blogs on

A blog was set up last year for the Bishop of Bristol and his wife following a motoring accident. The blog has received over 100000 hits so far, and the good news is that his wife Anthea ‘continues to improve’. I am pleased to see that Bishop Mike is to continue his blog on emerging church and other matters. His first post is here.

As Anthea continues to improve and her progress now is very much in the hands of the physios, we have taken the decision to reshape the blog as an opportunity for me to offer some thoughts on a variety of subjects.

Am I right in saying this is the first blog from a Church of England bishop? I’m not sure. I know the Episcopal church in Scotland has several bishops blogging. If so this is good news, given that the more centralised institutions of the* Church of England have generally been fairly anti-blogging up until now.

A blog to watch I think.

I’ve had a report that comments aren’t working again, but as you can see they are working for me at the time of writing.

If you try to add a comment but find it doesn’t work I’d appreciate an e-mail – dave at cartoonchurch.com. Include your comment and I’ll post that too.

I don’t know if he’s the first ENglish bishop to blog, but I know loads of Priests who blog and make use of blogformat in their parish websites. I think it’s an error to say the C-of-E is anti-blogging. I’ve received nothing but encouragement from Bishops, and anyone else who represents the “HEIRARCHY”, and endless encouragement from C-of-E members in general. I’ve also been invited to address a theological college on how to make use of a blog, how to understand the medium, etc etc. I have heard concerns from colleagues that people who don’t understand the medium may put themselves, their future employment, or their parish/college/institution into awkward situations by venting in public. I think concern about understanding the medium is only a good thing, don’t you?

Maggi – I should really have said that the more centralised institutions of the Church of England have been fairly anti-blogging. I say ‘generally been’ and ‘fairly’ as I know it is not a uniform picture, but that has been my experience from talking to people from within those institutions. And, yes, of course many clergy and lay people blog.

Of course concern to understand the medium is good – but that is rather different from the blanket ban that currently exists in some of these institutions.

I am collecting bishop blogs – here are some that I have discovered to date:
    Pierre Whalon Churches in Europe
    http://web.mac.com/pwhalon/iWeb/Bp%20Pierre%20Site/Bienvenue.html
    Christopher Epting Ecumenical Officer TEC
    http://ecubishop.wordpress.com/
    Charles Jenkins of Louisiana USA
    http://edola-bishop.blogspot.com/
    George Councell of NJ USA

I think bishop blogs can help them connect with people to a greater degree. Add any you know of or send them to me. Thanks.
