Vote: Putting up a Christmas tree

Christmas tree cartoon
[Larger version of cartoon on last year's Advent Calendar blog]

There has been some debate within the household about the putting up of a domestic Christmas tree. By this I mean one inside a house as opposed to in a shopping precinct or outside a town hall.

I have added a voting-type poll device to the left hand sidebar so as to gain an understanding of the Christmas tree habits of the Cartoon Blog viewing public. Please tell us when a Christmas tree should be put up. You might not have any strongly held beliefs on the matter, but please vote anyway telling us when you will be putting your tree or other decorations up.

This will then help us come to an informed decision, knowing that our habits are not vastly out of step with those of the Cartoon Blog readership.

I voted for Christmas Eve, but my rider to that is that it’s now almost impossible to delay getting your CHristmas Tree till the 23rd or 4th, because (like the lights in Oxford Street) Christmas will soon begin in November. My son and I now go and get our tree about the 20th, but don’t decorate it till Christmas Eve.

  2. Kyle says:

We put ours up two weeks before Christmas because it’s a real tree. Were it a fake tree, we’d have done it the first Sunday of Advent.

  3. Karin says:

I think it would be nice to wait for Christmas Eve, but the others in this household don’t want to wait that long. The current plan is to put it up on Saturday (i.e. 16th). We certainly need to buy it by then.

  4. jody says:

I voted for two weeks before, the caveat being that we can’t do it til this weekend, but that’s a mistake on our planning……….

  5. Mark Berry says:

    1 week… no question!

  6. Michelle says:

I think it should be put up just before Christmas… so usually would have been able to pick the 17th – 23rd option. But this year I gave in to family excitement and pressure and the tree’s just gone up!

  7. Steve says:

The tree, along with the rest of the house, gets decorated on Christmas Eve, but it needs a couple of days to dry out before putting lights on and for the branches to get their shape back after being shoved through the wrap-it-up-in-netting machine. So it actually goes up a couple of days before. We’re hoping to get one on Friday 22nd.

  8. Stella says:

Two weeks before Christmas; otherwise I get so busy doing concerts and services that it doesn’t go up at all!

  9. Sally says:

Never before school breaks up, so usually 18th or 19th, but my teenagers say that makes me look ‘cheap’, and proves I’m a killjoy. We tried not buying one until then last year, but ended up with the last (and worst) one left on sale. In some areas of my city, ‘trimming up’ your house, tree, garden happens any time after the Oct half term.

  10. Lesley says:

Dave your cartoons really make me laugh. Thanks.

  11. Sarah says:

We buy ours a week or so before Christmas………..I
    think?!

  12. Joanne says:

We get ours the 1st weekend in December, then decorate it as a family.

  13. Stephen says:

I have never been one for Advent Trees. Christmas Eve evening is the time to put up decorate the Christmas Tree. It does fill those few hours waiting to go to Midnight Mass.
