Boycott the West End

I am boycotting the West End of London until I forget to do so or have particular reason to go there.

This is why. Diamond Geezer informs me that the lights are going on even earlier in Oxford Street than normal – a whole week in fact. This is despite the fact that we are more aware now than ever of our need to cut down on energy usage for the future of the planet. (By the way, if you were hoping to go on the Climate Change March it was today – sorry.) The Oxford Street lights organisers quite clearly do not care about the planet, so I will be spending my money elsewhere and urging you to do the same. If you like you can tell them why as I just did:

Dear Oxford Street,

I am appalled at your decision to put the Christmas lights on a week earlier than in 2005. I will be avoiding Oxford Street and urging the readers of my weblog to do the same.

Sincerely,

Dave Walker

As an aside, I am reminded of this cartoon from my last year’s advent calendar blog.

I realise that the effect probably wouldn’t be as spectacular, but surely, with all that roofspace, some sort of solar power system could be utilised to provide enough power for a few tacky lights.

Here are the Oxford Street switch-on dates for the last five years:
    • Friday 15th November 2002
    • Wednesday 12th November 2003
    • Monday 15th November 2004
    • Tuesday 15th November 2005
    • Thursday 9th November 2006

Bit of a leap this year, then…

Do you reckon these Oxford St type people will bother to reply Dave? If they do, be sure to post it up here. I’m sure a lot of us would like to see it, even if it is a load of non-commital twaddle (which it most likely will be)

Some of these cartoons are great! Whenever I hire out my Bouncy Castles I’m always giving the kids copies of my pictures, but mine look rather ametuerish compared to some of these!

I’ve copied the details of the boycott onto my home page, and also sent an e-mail to Oxford Street. Can’t remember when I was last there, but if I should consider going there this year I will resist the urge.

    Campaign against London lights waste

See these three (whom I agree with): diamond geezer: The great switch-off. Boycott the West End: The Cartoon Blog by Dave Walker. maggi dawn: Bah humbug. Like Dave and Maggi I am just going to go to the Oxford Street

Better than buying your Christmas presents on Amazon why not buy from local shops, fairtrade products or even locally produced gifts. For the person who has everything – or needs a new lawnmower – why not buy a goat! Chickens and mosquito nets and a wide range of other gifts are avaialbe from Christian Aid, Good Gifts, Oxfam, Send a Cow, Traidcraft, World Vision (they have the best range of cards), and probably other sources as well.

If you can afford it, it is best to give a gift of this type, which includes training and support.

I am deeply shocked by comment #5 which uses the words “some of these” in a lukewarm compliment with reference to your cartoons. Can it be that you are long overdue for that “funny turn” you mentioned in “Evangelistic walking” on Nov. 6th? Also B.C.M.’s spelling is so amateurish.

    I despair…

I’ve written to them and blogged – thanks for the ‘toon, Dave!

    God bless, Kristen
