Cartoon plagiarism

There has been a small kerfuffle in the world of cartoonists over a cartoonist sacked by a student newspaper because some of her cartoons looked a bit too much like other people’s work. The Daily Cartoonist has links and opinions. Some cartoonists, such as Daryl Cagle (scroll down a bit), have been saying that it is not really the cartoonist’s fault as all she was doing was finding the obvious joke which is quite often going to be the same obvious joke that other cartoonists are finding.

I have sometimes found that other cartoonists have copied the work I have done. Take this cartoon of mine:

hardly believe she had won

Now compare it with this one from Punch:

calculating boy

I have a good mind to write to Punch and complain.

    Comic Steals Joke Shocker.

I like the clever way in which you distanced yourself from the Punch cartoon.

Although you also employ a number play, the total sum being exactly 10 times the value of the first hymn given i.e 630, it does in fact register an obvious disparaging of the Punch connection. “630″ being the numerical tag for “apoluo” (“Divorce”) in the Strongs Greek concordance, thus demonstrating that you do not recognise any link or inspiration gleened, the ideas are seperated.

Please try and be more subtle in the future.

I’d better go and get on with some proper work now :-)

Let’s be honest. There’s only about three jokes out there. Us humourists just dress them up slightly differently.

Of course, what I really appreciate about Dave’s cartoons is not the acerbic wit of his punchlines but his beautiful and skillfull execution of the drawings themselves. Very few people have his talent as an artist as well as a comedian.

I saw some cartoons of Reubens in an art gallery once. They weren’t funny.

likewise, madpriest, I remember being taken to see a Da Vinci cartoon when we were kids and were disappointed to discover it was
    a black and white
    b didn’t move
c didn’t have bugs bunny in it!
(our mother was embarrassed by our public protests no doubt!)

That said, of course, Dave’s cartoons are black and white , don’t move and rarely contain bugs bunny but are generally rather good!

It is just as well Reubens is dead as clearly Dave’s cartoons are already better and his artwork is alomst to Reubens standard and by the end of the course….
