Internet Explorer 7

In a couple of weeks all of the people who use Internet Explorer on their computers will be upgraded in their sleep to Internet Explorer 7. It is quite different from the current Internet Explorer and so I, along with website owners everywhere have been downloading it to see whether our websites still work when looked at in the new version.

Here is the result when you look at CartoonChurch.com in IE7 as compared with Firefox, my internet browser of choice:

browsers compared
Goodness.

Oddly all of my old rubbish websites that are built using tables, chairs and pieces of string look fine, but this one, which is supposed to use the latest standards and cascading style sheets and pillowcases (technical term) looks rubbish. Well, slightly rubbish. Mainly because the great big title at the top becomes a great big huge oversized title and makes it look like the site is shouting. Which it is, but only quietly. Also the title overruns onto the handwritten writing. I suspect it does the same on your computer.

I shall have to look beneath the bonnet to see whether I can do some tweaking. This site has never looked as good in Internet Explorer as it has in Firefox, but in this latest version it looks a lot worse.

While I am here, can I just say that I do not like the way that the new Internet Explorer gives everything a funny slightly fuzzy look. I prefer the old fashioned sharpness of Firefox and IE6. Also it takes an age to install itself. Make sure you have a good book handy.

I believe you can turn the strange fuzziness off – it’s called “cleartype”. If you actually like it you can turn it on throughout windows in the Display options. I too was rather bemused by it when I installed IE7. Beware if you use Dreamweaver though – IE7 seems to do strange things to site settings somehow or other!

Just a quick clarification. From what I heard although the update to IE7 will be automatically rolled out to all Windows users, the actually update process itself will be optional. So people won’t *have* to do it, so I’ve heard.

However, if you’re a normal person (i.e. not a geek) and a window tells you an important update is available, do you want to accept it, you would. Well, I would. But then I’m a trusting soul.

Well I think your site can shout at me anytime it wants.

I’m not going to say anything about whether your css code is web w3c compliant, as I know mine isn’t :-)

Microsoft produce a browser that doesn’t conform to standards? I’m so surprised… :D

Actually I’ve had regular problems with our site over pages that work fine in Firefox and Safari, and at times even the Mac version of IE, but barf on the PC Internet Explorer. More often than not it’s down to the relative size of graphics or textr.

This sounds a bit alarming to me. Like Chris, I always said “yes” to install updates, but a few weeks ago, I did that, and now my computer claims that I am running a pirated copy of Windows. Well. that was news to me! OK my computer is a bit old, but I paid proper money for it. I don’t like the idea of Microsoft tinkering with my computer while I’m on-line – they might decide to stop me accessing the internet or anything! So now I don’t automatically accept Microsoft’s updates.

Can’t say I am at all surprised, ie does wierd things to most sites… my blog on ie does strange things depending on whose PC it is, some it cuts off the end of the text even though it is set to free flow… some the fonts just look rubbish, all blocky and low-res… my personal view of ie (we use Firefox on our PC’s as well as on the Mac (well it’s mainly flock on the Mac now) is the same as contemporary Christian Music… ie. I’m sure that it seems fantastic and really up to date… until you try to compare it to the real thing! ;-D

Maybe it will encourage more people to use Firefox. Hurrah!
