My Myspace space

my friends

Myspace is the 6th most popular website in the world accoring to Alexa. It is No 3 in the USA, but only No 7 over here as we are partial to things like ebay and the BBC.

For those who are unaware of it Myspace is a site that lets you set up a personalised page containing photos, music and blog and other bits and bobs and then interact with others by commenting on their spaces and suchlike. It has been known for its popularity amongst the young, but these days the statistics show that it is used by people of all ages.

But is it any good? Well, I have set up a Myspace whathaveyou at www.myspace.com/cartoonchurch as it seemed to be a good thing to do for networking and raising awareness of my cartoon work etc. I have to say, while I can see good points about it I do find it a frustrating site to use. It is cluttered and confusing (it reminds me of MSN in that respect) and certain things quite simply don’t work, in particular blog editing and the ‘search’ and ‘browse’ functions which usually either gave no results or gave me thousands of results for things I didn’t ask for. Error messages are frequent.

For this and for other reasons I’m not advocating that you rush over to Myspace and create a profile for the sake of it. But having said that if anyone else would like to be my Myspace friend then that would be lovely. Although I’ve very little idea as to how to carry out complex procedures such as making a new friend.

Update: I now have 5 friends! Great! I have no idea whether I am their friends as well or if I have to do something about that. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

deeply encouraging that an advanced web being like you finds Myspace difficult to use…

I registered with it a while back, to try and be trendy in middle age, and have got absolutely nowhere. I can’t even work out how to link to you today as my first friend.

    Oh well… :-)

  2. Neil says:

I cannot bear myspace, it is clumsy and cluttered looking and reminds me of the old Geocities pages people used to make before the internet got shiny and nice.

  3. jody says:

my hubby has a myspace page, due to his quite wonderful love of youthwork and as an attempt to understand those that he has been called (am I allowed to say that?) to work with.

I think he quite likes the whole ‘myspace’ thing…

It’s utterly baffling, isn’t it? I joined to properly view and hear details of a friend’s band (The Shakes – new single out soon, v good) but I couldn’t tell you how it all works. I get periodic invitations from people I’ve never heard of to become their friend – but I, like you, don’t know how.

    Hopeless,

people over a hundred can’t register..how would Methuselah have got on with 800 years of not being able to log on? how ageist is that…?

Also when I try sign up it says type in the number in the box but there is no image.

I think there should be a new web site only for people without myspace friends

(even for me the first attempt had too many typos!)

  6. Ben says:

I was quite snobby about myspace for a while, but realised that a lot of the people I wanted to connect/network with were there.

It is frustrating to use, and ugly. But I’m finding it fun. Interesting CMS link.

congratulations – looks like you now have 5 friends.

be nice. play fair. oh, and remember to share. those are some lessons from kindergarten re: social skills. you can do it, dave. i’m sure many more friends are on the horizon…
    :)

  8. Nefertiki says:

Sorry, I tried to register on myspace but was in effect escorted out by security. As if that wasn’t enough I was also told that I was ineligible for membership, based on information which I provided.

It sort of makes me want to try again and beat the system.

  9. Emma says:

I don’t like myspace either. In fact I only joined because the Youth Conference in the Blackburn Diocese had a space and said we should go on and link with them. I prefer bebo which is a much neater and prettier English version of networking. Besides which my friends are on bebo and not on myspace.

  10. Yorkshire Soul says:

I quite like MySpace, but the search functions are crap.

  11. Phisch says:

I started using Vox instead. Similar idea, but it’s really easy to use. Of course, the crowd is smaller so it may not fit your purposes. But it’s pretty.
