Getting hold of the book

dave walker guide to the church - picture of covers

I was wondering how easy people have been finding it to get hold of a copy of my book. It would be really interesting to hear where you have found the book and where you haven’t found it. I have heard far more reports of people not finding the book in their local Christian bookshop than those finding it so far, but it would be good to get a more complete picture. Knowing the name of the shop and whether it is part of a chain or group than that would be very useful information too. Responses in the comments below or via e-mail would be hugely appreciated.

Our Christian bookshop is tiny and never has much in, I have ordered a copy from our local independent shop, but that was two weeks ago and I haven’t heard anything from them yet, I may go in later and see if he has had any success yet (I did get all the details from a web site so he should be able to find it!)

I was dashing t hrough town the other day and stopped off at the local Christian bookshop (next to the art shop, which I had to go into anyway) and didn’t see it on the shelf. I’m in two minds as to whether ordering it from one of the three waterstone’s in Guildford (long story) would be better than ordering it from the small Christian bookshop would be.

Anyhow, next time I’m in town and don’t have something to do (ha!) I’ll check up and see if I can see it anywhere.

  3. Dave says:

Thanks Simo – yours was one of the accounts of not finding the book on the shelves of which I was aware.

Paul – thank you. I think either place would be marvellous. I suppose, whilst I’d love to see the book make it in the larger chains like Waterstones it might be that a Christian bookshop, should they decide to stock it as a result of someones order, would sell more copies.

By the way – go steady on the dashing. Too much dashing can be a problem.

  4. Richard says:

Amazon UK only have 3 copies left (but more on the way apparently) – also got a glowing five star review too.

Maybe you could tell us where all the big piles of books in the picture are, seem to have lot of copies there. :D

  5. Lizzie says:

I placed an order at the local independent bookshop in Beckenham a couple of days before publication. Though they said it might take up to a fortnight I had it within the week. And jolly good it is, too.

  6. Karin says:

I thought the “the small Christian bookshop” Kercal mentioned was a branch of Wesley Owen. The Cathedral might be a better bet. Last time I was there they still had the Rev G Ambulance’s ministry handbook amongst other ministerial books. :D

I hope to get there soon to investigate, as well as look at other books.

  7. Sivin says:

one thing for sure if it arrives here in Malaysia it might be too expensive to attract buyers! :-) I’ll keep an eye out and depend on your blog for a while. Love your work!

  8. Chas says:

I have ordered one from SPCK Online; am eagerly awaiting its arrival …

  9. Sarah B says:

They didn’t have it in Blackwells in Oxford – much to my disappointment. I’ve not been to my other local so I don’t know in person but apparently they have it

  10. Johann says:

Two Christian bookshops did not have it – have ordered one from both, but not collected yet. One said it should be in next day. Have yet to go to Cardiff where I hope the SPCK bookshop might stock it anyway. Will also try Waterstones there.

  11. Chas says:

The book (along with one other which I ordered at the same time) was awaiting me when I arrived at work this morning; I am now being enlightened (as I dip into your book from time to time instead of working); am enjoying …

  12. Jeremy says:

I ordered mine direct from the publisher – and have received TWO copies so far…. in the bush in the Northern Territory of Australia!!!!

  13. Thomas Davie says:

I pre-ordered five copies for our bookshop ages ago from Gardners Books (the largest book distributor in the country). So far no success.

  14. Canadian says:

Is it being sold in North America at all? They don’t have it at the Diocesan Book Room in Montreal.

  15. Dave says:

Canadian – my understanding is that SCM-Canterbury Press will ship the book anywhere in the world. See their website. Jeremy’s experience would seem to suggest that it works!

Richard – the pictures were taken at Greenbelt. Hence the ever so slight ‘in a damp tent’ look to the books. Obviously in real life they are not damp or in a tent.

Thanks to everyone else who has gone to the effort of ordering one or more books.

  16. Canadian says:

Thank you Dave. I see that orders up to 15 pounds (don’t know how to do that weird L thing for pounds) cost 5 pounds to ship, which is almost as much as the book, so I will have to think of something else to add to my order.

  17. Pat Hemstock says:

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon and received it immediately it was published. – Great book, it made me laugh out loud!

  18. chrisspurs says:

Just had letter from Waterstones in Merryhill to say my copy of book has arrived.

  19. blonde says:

i bought mine at greenbelt, knowing the CLC had just closed and the only other christian bookshop (in the market) is a bit on the scary (read: lacking completely in the sense of humour department) side. uplands bookshop usually orders anything in print within a couple of days but sometimes charge more than the price on the back of the book so haven’t tried them, sorry. ps when ar eyou next in wales/swampea? hugs x

  20. Jude says:

    Hi Dave

I ordered the book through news from nowhere.org.uk as you suggested, and got an e-mail saying when it was published it’d be sent, and true to their word they did. 65p postage – spot on.

Talking of spot on – the book. It’s made me and all my house laugh, with ripples of “that’s so true” and “that’s just like my old church x with x doing that”.

Brilliant, keep up the good work!

    Jude

  21. John says:

Any chance it becomes available in Canada ?

  22. John says:

    Oops… I missed the comments about Canada… sorry… :o )
