We are at Greenbelt and all is going well. Just to say that our little gathering is now a tiny bit later on Sunday afternoon, ie at 4.30pm on our little bit of campsite 9 under the ‘W’ flag. We plan to be there until about 7pm, so do come along even if it is for just some of the time. Anyone reading is welcome.
I’ve also seen the book for the first time this evening and signed a few copies. All terribly exciting.

I know, what you really want is lovely pictures of the seaside, but for now I’m going to leave you with this ecumenical information to ponder whilst I’m away for the next week. We’re going to my parents in Wales for a little wedding celebration with some people from my home town and then to the Greenbelt Festival in Cheltenham. Please note that comments will probably not be moderated during this time, which mans your words of insight may take a week to appear depending upon whether the software likes the look of you.
Some information and reminders for those going to the Greenbelt Festival in Cheltenham (Apologies for those unable to go - this must be really tedious) :
The Book
The Dave Walker Guide to the Church will, I really really hope, be available from the Church Times yurt. No signing session has been allotted as far as I know, but I will try to spend a bit of time there and make sure the people in charge of the venue know when that will be. It would be great to meet anyone who reads this site and/or enjoys my cartoons.
Wibsite Sunday afternoon gathering
We’re still planning to have a little gathering for Wibsite.com bloggers and anyone else on Sunday afternoon at 4pm. There really should be no reason to change this, but I will post here and let you know by any means possible in the highly unlikely event that there is any change. In any case I’ll try to log in and post some more precise directions here when I know exactly where the campervan is going to be. All being well it will be in campsite 9 (map here) and there will be a white ‘W’ flag and the wibsite.com gazebo (so no problem if it rains). Anyone who reads this blog is welcome - feel free to bring some refreshment, liquid or otherwise.
See you in September or thereabouts when daily posting along with new cartoons and the usual in-depth analysis will recommence.

It is indeed a seagull standing on a plastic roof with the photo being taken from underneath. It is a young herring gull which is why it doesn’t look white.
The cottage is the one we stayed in last week in St Ives. We love St Ives.

Everyone loves to see holiday photographs, so here is one. If you can tell what it is and you are in an internet cafe please put your hand up and shout ‘I know! I know! I know!’ very loudly. If not you can comment in the comments in the time-honoured tradition (should you so wish).
Anyway. Hello! We are back from honeymoon and as you can see I am taking a short break from my blogging break. So I am still on a break, but this is a break from that break. I cannot explain it in simpler terms really, except to say that full daily blog posting will recommence in September but I may do one or two between now and then.
So, what is there to say? The days leading up to the wedding were not without their dramas, but the wedding day was fantastic and we’ve had a great holiday. We now have a couple of days up to our knees in washing before going to Wales and then to the Greenbelt Festival. Thank you for all the good wishes and kind wishes, and for many that were both good and kind.
Talking of Greenbelt, I look forward to seeing anyone else who is going. We’re still hoping to have a little Wibsite-and-anyone-else gathering on Sunday at about 4pm in the campsite - Do send me your mobile number if you’d like to be kept up to date with any changes. Please note that I will get any e-mails sent tomorrow, Tuesday the 22nd of August, before we leave, but I may not get any sent after that before we leave for the Festival. If your coming to the little gathering and wanted to bring some refreshment that would be fine too.
Book news. I’m really really hoping it will be at Greenbelt as planned. The latest is that the consignment of Dave Walker Guides to the Church should be delivered to the publisher’s warehouse in Norwich on Wednesday and then sent over to arrive at Cheltenham on the Thursday. So all very last minute and cutting it fine, not like the things I usually do at all. In fact it is likely that I may not even see a copy until you do. Goodness. At the moment no Greenbelt signing session has been programmed, though signed copies will be available. But I will of course be more then happy to sign any copies if anyone should request. I will try to make it to the Church Times Yurt (Isn’t ‘yurt’ a lovely word?) for some of the time. I’ve also heard that the Church Times will be giving copies of the book away to new subscribers, which is nice.
Good. I might post another holiday snap tomorrow should demand be high and if there is baying in the comment box etc.

I’ve posted every single day of the year so far, but today this particular habit comes to an end. It’s time to take a break. I had thought I might get the automated blogging device to post some old repeated cartoons over the summer but circumstances have meant that not everything has gone quite according to plan. So, the Cartoon Blog is taking a break for a few weeks, which might not be a bad thing. Here’s a few things I wanted to say:
Wedding
Thanks for all your greetings and best wishes and suchlike. Unfortunately things have all been a bit dramatic recently, but everything will come together in the end. The bride’s father broke his hip last week, but the good news is he should be out of hospital tomorrow and hopefully there at the wedding on Saturday. In addition my van broke down yesterday and the AA had to come out. As a result I had to cancel my appointment to make my hair look respectable and I’ve spent way too much time on buses going to and from the garage when I should have been doing more important things. But anyway, everything will get done I’m sure.
Book
Thanks for all the kind comments and encouragements about the book. I’ve just heard that because the cartoons are largely landscape and the book design is largely portrait they are going to print the cartoons on their sides. This will be ideal for those that like to read whilst lying on their sides. The rest of you will just have to practice tilting your head to the left whilst reading (In Australia you’ll need to tilt your head to the right of course). You can see the book cover and find out where to get it here.
Greenbelt
It will be great to see some of you at the Greenbelt Festival. We’re planning to have a little gathering for the Wibsite bloggers at 4pm on the Sunday afternoon - details here. If everything goes according to plan we’ll be in campsite 9 on the map on the Greenbelt site. Any readers of this site would be most welcome. Look out for the campervan rusting slightly at the seams and the big white flag saying ‘W’. If we have to make any change to this arrangement I’ll try to get the word out by whatever means I can - including posting here hopefully. If you wanted to send me your mobile number so I can let you know any changes then feel free.
Comments
I’m afraid comments won’t be moderated for a few weeks from now. This means that if you haven’t commented on the blog before or you unwittingly use a word favoured by spammers your comment won’t be shown for quite a while. Just so you know.
Apologies
Sorry if you’re waiting for some sort of administrational piece of paper from me and I haven’t done it yet. In particular there are some receipts outstanding and I know I am way way way behind on asking for renewal subscriptions for subscribers whose subscriptions have lapsed. If this is you please do continue to use the cartoons - I will sort this out on my return and give those affected by these failings some free months on their licences or a free biro or something.
Anyway - must dash. Off to get married. See you in September, or possibly very slightly before.

This is a larger version of the cover. You can click on it to see it a bit more clearly.
More book news:
- I am told that the book should be out for the Greenbelt Festival
- This being the case there will be a signing session. I will be hiring people to make it look as if there is a great big queue.
- There will be a film - a whimsical but violent summer blockbuster in 2008 I am told, by Richard, who is a Methodist minister and therefore trustworthy.
- Oh yes - the cover above is a proof - there may or may not be some minor changes to correct a few minor items, I don’t know.
My previous post has more info on places to buy it etc.

Yes, there’s a spiritual quality in jokes. I mean I don’t want to say that joking is not part of truth. When you’ve got a good joke you’ve often got a great truth there too, somewhere in there. The lovely thing about humour is not the practised humour, but the spontaneous humour that occurs between people you see. And it’s quite an impulse to joke that the producers of truth, lo and behold, we find ourselves saying something we didn’t think we were saying, you know. And in our jokes we speak our truths that we can’t say seriously. And I like that; the jokey tendency is often a way of accessing what we really feel.
Taking a moment out from my manic preparational activity I’ve been exploring this new Leunig site, found via John Davies. The quote above is a radio one, hence its unpolished quality. It is taken from this interview, one of many linked to from the site. Don’t miss the cartoons and the philosophies, both of which contain some gems.
I’ve been a fan of Leunig’s cartoons for a few years now, but hadn’t any of his books until Ian from Australia kindly sent me one the other day. Thanks Ian, thanks John, thanks everyone.

The Dave Walker Guide to the Church was published by Canterbury Press at the end of August 2006 and launched at the Greenbelt Festival (pictures). It costs £5.99 and contain about 90 of my cartoons, about 70 of those being the ‘Guide to the Church’ series from the Church Times and the remainder being some that have appeared on this website along with some other new material. The book has now been reprinted (December 2006) and the ISBN number is now 9781853117794.
See some sample cartoons
Some examples of cartoons from the book are now here.
The best places to buy the book:
There are various options:
- You can buy it directly from the publisher, SCM Canterbury Press
- By ordering it at a local bookshop (Quote ISBN number 9781853117794)
- Online from such stockists as Church House bookshop, SPCK Online, Waterstones, Wesley Owen, Amazon UK or Amazon USA.
- You might find it on the shelves of a bookshop locally. See below for possible locations.
Shops where a physical copy has been seen on the shelves by Cartoon Blog readers:
- Church House bookshop, Westminster, London
- St Mungo’s Bookshop, 52 Parson Street, Glasgow G4 0RX 0141 552 5523
- Hatchards in Piccadilly, London
- Christian Book Centre, Preston
- Shepherds Christian Bookshop, Newport
- Waterstones, various
- Presence: 19-21 The Parade, High Street, Watford WD17 1LQ, 01923 237633
If you are making a special journey I would advise telephoning the shop first, as this list is probably out of date by now.
Shops that have ordered the book at some point:
The publishers have sent me this list. It includes every shop that has ordered a copy of the book, but it does not necessarily mean that there is a copy on the shelves as they might have ordered a copy in for a customer or sold out. You are advised to check before travelling - doing a Google search will usually give you a telephone number.
