Back to Church Sunday

back to church

Back To Church Sunday aims to get people back to church on the 24th of September by bribing them with chocolate and a free bookmark. Hmmm. I wonder whether addressing the reasons people leave church in the first place might be as useful, if not slightly more. Then again, these people on 43 Things obviously think going back to church is the thing to do.

Meanwhile Michael Hampson is of the opposite opinion, as he explains in his Guardian piece today. The Church of England is dying and we should form an orderly queue if we want to buy up some of the kneelers. Does he have a good point or are these the bitter rantings of an (ex?) Priest? You decide.

Right. Back to work.

Perhaps what we need to do is invent Anglicanism 2.0, and all will be well …

I admit I didn’t read the whole piece, perhaps he has some interesting points, but it was so terribly biased I have to say that it definately reads as the bitter rantings… He has clearly been very hurt by the church. Hmm, interesting. I shall ponder it.

I thought I’d got away with walking home and leaving my bike at Church…. Do you have spies?

BTCS is a nice idea, but what’s suddenly going to make people decide that sunday is the right time to get out of bed early and go somewhere they don’t want to go?

And I still think it’s working on a silly model of mission. All that happens with these seeker friendly services (IME) is that all the congregation get annoyed at having to change what they would otherwise be doing, the sermon is either diluted or made overtly evangelistic, and the people who come smile sweetly as they leave and resolve never to come back again (usually because of some birthday song travesty!).

We all know this by now surely. Mission is about what we do in the work place (or the post office in your case Dave) or down the pub or even in formal mission events. A weekly service in your local church should be primarily for those who go to it.

Personally I think that we should go back to worshipping cats. You don’t need to build places of worship as you can do this at home or in the street.

Being a Baptist I can understand why some people are turned off by the CofE, or in my case CofW. For me it is to ritualistic and formalised but for others it is what they crave.

Having said that, the non-conformist churches are equally in decline. We all seem to have lost touch with the outside world and are viewed as old fashioned, or out of touch. Many church bodies have forgotten that we are not just buildings but people. Therefore we need to interact with other people.

The strength of the church has always been in community work, not just preaching but doing. How many Christians do you know who only go to church but never bring the spirit of church to the people?
