Vestments

vestments

I’ve been on the internet doing a little bit of research into vestments and suchlike. Dear me, I have a lot to learn in this world. If anyone knows a thing or two about what clergy wear during services and the different headgear that they wear from time to time then do feel free to educate me in the comments below. This site is the best I’ve found so far. It’s very useful but the more I know the better.

Oh, by the way, if any of the offers in the image above interest you see here. (The link is not an endorsement of the site – I just stumbled upon it.)

Why settle for a Priest when you can have a Deluxe Pope for only about $33 extra? That’s what I say.

just what I needed to allow me to get hold of the right outfits to stop me feeling threatened by my wife’s priesthood. Many thanks.

ken collins absolutely rocks. I love that site. I can probably tell you more than any reasonable human being would want to know about what the clergy do or don’t wear for services. And despite the endless symbolism and historical interest (in a train-spotty kind of way) it really isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things. I broke all the vestment rules on the last 2 sundays because the heat was so intense wearing the “correct” outfit would have guaranteed fainting in the heat. SO I figured out a nice postmodern, edited (though liturgically incorrect) mode of attire

Having looked at the costume website linked above, my questions are: Why is Jesus, at $30, cheaper than the Pope? And why is Mary, at $52.99 the same price as the Pope – is there some theological significance in the pricing?

  4. Tiffer says:

A friend of my parents in law who came to my wedding last year is a retired clergyman – and he came in full victorian parsons gear, most elaborate. After the service, he leaned over to my low and lovely Rector who had married us and said “I haven’t seen a funeral stole used at a wedding before” and walked off.

Thanks all. Maggi – my feeling is the as you say the symbolism is important, but not that important. I feel wary about poking fun at vestments too much, but then in other ways they are asking for it slightly.
