Book cover ideas

making church more excitingI am seriously overwhelmed by the number and quality of your ‘vicar’s study’ contributions. Loads of ideas and I am truly grateful. Seriously, especially as lots of them were on Saturday afternoon during prime sermon preparation time.

Ok, this isn’t an idea to enable me to draw a cartoon as such, but I do need an idea for a cartoon. I need to choose one cartoon for the book cover.

It needs to be:
(a) Good
(b) Not too complex, perhaps ruling out something like the church kitchen
(c) An image that is representative of my current work
(d) An image that will make the casual browser want to see more / look inside / buy the book

Any thoughts? I’m not asking for your favourite cartoon necessarily, (I will be doing that for another reason in a week or two), but one that you can picture on the front of a book. The cartoon on the left is one idea, being one of my better known ones. But it could be something from the Church Times ones (which are not yet on this site).

I suspect asking about this goes against of all sorts of protocols. Book covers are probably supposed to be decided upon by a team of publishing types in a darkened room, but… what the heck. It also could be construed as a bit of an introspective ego thing asking about a book cover, but in my defence let me assure you that it is a genuine tricky decision for me.

Thanks again for your help over the weekend and in advance for this one.

I’ve just looked back through some of the old cartoons and I think that you might have picked the best for the book cover. It says a lot about the sort of cartoons inside – it can be seen from a distance – and it still makes me smile! Go for it…

  2. Larry Day says:

I agree with James. Its visibility from a distance is significant and it draws people into the book. Trust your hunches Dave.

  3. Larry Day says:

What’s the title of the book, by the way?

  4. Kathryn says:

Dave…massive clergy response was precisely BECAUSE it was Saturday sermon prep time! I refer you to your 5 a day post, and its comments!
That’s a good cartoon, definitely…but then, none of us here need convincing. Hope book will be ready for GB??

  5. Serena says:

I reckon that one or We bow down, which makes me laugh right out loud!

  6. Nefertiki says:

How about putting yourself in the cartoon, Dave, in the throes of creating a cartoon. Leaning over the sill of an open window are a couple of woolly sheep and Farmer Wibblethorpe, all with anxious expressions. Farmer W. is pointing to his watch and says, “Stop mooning about, Dave, you still have 138 cartoons to create before lunch!”

Or you could use the marvellous one with the kids in church at the head of the blog.

  7. Paul says:

Yep, the young people – definitely, it’s top drawer and has instant appeal. And maybe this is my pew or how to make church brilliant on the back.

    Thanks for help on this.

The title of the book might well be ‘The Dave Walker Guide to the Church’, but I am also considering ‘Hymns and sacred songs we know and love’. (The latter is only if the project evolves into being a CD, which looks unlikely.)
