Trinouncement*

STAR THINGYAs promised yesterday I have three announcements to make relating to my cartoons and website. A trinouncement*, if you will.

1) My Church Times cartoons will be appearing on this website
Up until this point my regular cartoons series in the Church Times, The Dave Walker Guide to the Church have not appeared on this site. The idea has been that from the Church Times point of view the more reasons that there are for people to buy the paper the better (my words not theirs). This is understandable of course. But they have now very kindly agreed that I can post some of the cartoons on this site. I won’t be posting all of them, but a good number (See Announcement 3 for one of the reasons for this). They will appear here a few weeks after their appearance in the newspaper at the earliest so buying the paper is still the best way to see them.

2) CartoonChurch.com licences will cover the republication of my Church Times cartoons
I get a lot of e-mails asking whether people can republish my ‘Guide to the Church’ cartoons in their own church magazines. Up to now I have, when asked, allowed people to republish a single cartoon for free, but the situation has been rather unsatisfactory given that I am trying to make a living from the whole cartoon side of things. So, my Church Times material will now be covered by my existing licences for church republication – so £35 for unlimited use for a year or £3 for a single item. There will be some extra text that will need to accompany these cartoons if they are republished – this will be appearing shortly. Please note thought that I will only have some high resolutions versions on the site for download – the others will need to be scanned from the paper or cut out using the old-fashioned scissor method etc. Once again thanks need to go to the good people at the Church Times who have allowed me to do this.

3) There is going to be a book of my cartoons released this summer
This probably the most exciting announcement for most people, so I’ve left it until last. I had thought that if there was going to be a book it would not be available until next year (2007), but now, all being well the book will be released in time for the Greenbelt festival at the end of August. It will be published by SCM Canterbury Press and will hopefully be launched at Greenbelt with signings and suchlike. The book will contain most if not all of my ‘Guide to the Church’ series along with a selection of my other work. As most of you will be aware this summer is going to be quite a busy one for me what with getting married and moving house, but work for the book will not add a huge burden as I was always going to need to get a lot of extra drawings done early to cover the summer in any case. Further details about the book will be forthcoming when I know them.

————————————–

* Yes, I know. This is not really a word. But unless anyone knows a better way to describe three announcements it will be a word from this point on. I suspect a school of thought will develop that insists that it should be ‘trinnouncement’ with a double first ‘n’, but as the founder of the word I think ‘trinouncement’ is better. At the time of writing the first page for ‘trinouncement’ on Google is empty, so you had better get blogging on the subject if you want to grab one of the coveted first page spots. If ‘trinouncement’ takes off as a word you could make a fortune.

trinouncementUpdate: Thanks for the kind comments. As for the spelling I have enabled a poll in the left sidebar. I think I am swimming with the tide of popular opinion, but I am open to hear the voices of dissenters should any exist.

Other places (besides Google search) to watch for the progress of ‘Trinouncement’ as a word:
Google Blog Search: trinouncement
Technorati Search: trinouncement
trinouncement – Ask.com UK Search
At the time of writing only Dave Warnock has joined the great search engine land grab for this term.

Yey! I get the first comment :-) Points 1 and 2 of the trinouncement are indeed the less exciting points of the trinouncement, at least for me … but point 3!!! Wooohoooo!! If SCM Canterbury Press had a wishlist function … I would be using it!

  2. Chris Clark says:

Sounds a bit mainstream to me! Might mean the camper van gets mended or replaced….

Hope the book goes well. It will make a great Christmas present.

  3. Ruth says:

Good luck with the book. I think that it sounds like an excellent Christmas present idea for people to buy for their vicars. I shall buy one for my mum, as she’s a lifer as far as church going is concerned and she likes a good giggle.

I like the new word too. My sister worked in Papua New Guinea for a while. She and her two friends were known as “treepella” by the locals (three fellas, I suppose). I’m just guessing that there may be a rather wonderful term for “three announcements” in that part of the world already. They have a fantastic term for the word “piano”, but I have forgotten it now. I’m going to go and see if I can discover it (using google) and then I’ll get back to you, as I’m sure you want to know what it is …

And if John or Anne (you know who you are) read this, they can introduce everyone to their fantastic word for all things that might be satsumas (tangerines, clementines etc.) It’s their word, so I feel it’s only right that they should take the glory.

Back in a mo if I can find that word for piano.

  4. Ruth says:

    Here it is:
bigpela yu paitim til e crai owt = Piano

(With approx 400 different languages being spoken in PNG, most of the population speak this “pidgen” language (as it is known) in addition to their own so that they can communicate with others who live on the same island).

  5. Nefertiki says:

A trireply to your great announcements:

I’ve long wanted to see more of your Church Times cartoons and will be glad to have that opportunity. Allowing you to reproduce them is a benevolent act.

I’m truly excited about your book and will be happy to buy a copy as soon as possible.

I think trinouncement is a very fine word and should be rapidly adopted by all who are literate in English, not necessarily as native speakers. The only question might be its pronunciation. While I am pronouncing it as ‘trynouncement’, possibly those who are not native English speakers but have studied ESL, might have other ideas. As for the French, who knows what they will do, possibly integrate it into French and claim it as their own. But we will know.

Also, now that New Guinea has been mentioned, I have to say that I once saw a New Guinea folk opera all in pidgin (could catch a word here and there)performed at the Edinburgh Festival. The whole cast, men and women, performed topless. An interesting experience. I was glad to read, after returning home, that they were to perform in Malaysia when they were told they couldn’t appear topless. Absurd! But they stuck to their guns and the government relented.

I guess I had to write such a long reply to gain solace for not being first.

  6. Serena says:

Superb on all counts! 3) is the most exciting from my PoV; I will save my pennies to buy the book from you at Greenbelt :)

Also, I assume from the spelling that it is “trynouncement”. A double ‘n’ would make the ‘i’ a short one, as in “Trinny” (and Susannah, of course). If you’re pronouncing it the way Nefertiki and I assume, then the later school of thought will be sadly mistaken.

    A tricongratulation

    Good news

Whoohoo – know whats on my Christmas list!!!

  9. Chorister says:

Good luck with the book. And thanks for the postcards which I will leave lying around nonchalantly in the hope of attracting publicity.

  10. Karin says:

I thought you might bring out a book. That seems like a good idea. Look forward to it being published.

I would think some churches might find it useful to be able to reproduce your Church Times cartoons, too, as quite a few have been rather good.

I can’t remember if you’ve done a guide for people like me who were used to everything appearing on an overhead projector and so had to get used to checking hymn numbers, juggling books and keeping track of where we are in the communion service. Perhaps it was before I needed it, so I may have forgotten.

Hoorah for all: and especially #3!

    Hoorah!

  12. revjph says:

Hi Dave – Brilliant news on all three counts. I’ve always wanted to share your Church Times cartoons with my stingy congregation who would rather buy The Mail than a decent publication which would actually keep them informed about the faith they profess to believe in. I think today’s cartoon is excellent. Only two weeks ago I had to humiliate certain members of my congregation from the pulpit because they were flying those plastic, St. George flags on their cars, and their cars were parked in the church car park. As a good churchman, and strict adherent to all laws, I pointed out to them that they were breaking the law as they needed a faculty from the diocese!

  13. Chris says:

Excellent news, Dave. I can now say to people proudly “I know a cartoonist with a book”.

    I’m off to book trinouncement.com…
