In through one ear

in through one ear

Busy day today doing my final preparations for the Christian Resources Exhibition.

The idea for this cartoon came after the sermon in church this morning. It was about Samuel and listening to God. There is a belief that if one is quiet and listens that one can hear God speak. Whether whether the word ‘listen’ or the word ‘speak’ are meant as metaphorical I am not quite sure. In any case, if I was to write a list of things I am not really sure about then this would be on it. Do feel free to explain what you think and your basis for doing so.

One Response to “In through one ear”

Well, they do say that fools rush in etc, so here goes. I do think that the words ‘listen,’ ‘speak,’ as well as ‘hear,’ and even ‘quiet’ are metaphors, as in ‘a mighty fortress is our God,’ (used, appropriately, as an example for metaphor in the dictionary.)

Some form of the word ‘communicate’ would probably suit me better. Not that God couldn’t perform those actions literally. Probably. But we don’t give our brains credit for their (god-given) abilities, such as translating communications from on high into forms as they would be perceived by one or more of our physical senses. You could say we don’t comprehend everything about our brains any more than we do our souls, the universe, or humanity itself.

Thanks for the opportunity to think. Some of my thoughts may be heretical but I admit, I have always had a soft spot for heretics. Especially those from the times when holding heretical ideas was practically a death wish.
